Bassaniobroke, I am having a issue with using the competitior figures. The issue is that my company and the compeititors within the industry has a different reporting year-end. eg my company year end is 31 March, while the competitior is 31 Oct.
How do I compare or can I state this a limitation to my research.

March 5, 2013 at 6:58 pm #119313Hi Kenneth,
Three suggestions.
1. Find another competitor with March ending.
2. If company’s year end is March, then find out when they release report. If you are taking March 2012 as year end then you are running risk of 2013 report release in April 2013. If it is so then you will have to incorporate this report into RAP. Please note that you have to use latest available statements into RAP. our submission deadline is between May 1 and May 26 (roughly-please view OB website) so take this point into consideration.
3. Most of companies also release quarterly reports, you may add subtract quarters to bring matching data for comparison. for example your company year end is March, so take data of four quarters with end quarter being July-Sept. What I mean is that you will make a year which start from Oct and end in Sept. (for this you will have to manipulate figures through quarterly reports)
4. you may insert a note about limitation of research.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Bassaniobroke,
Suggestion 1: is not feasible, all the companies with this industry has different year end
Suggestion 2: I did my preliminary checks, the report release date is usually 45 days after the year end (this will be about May 15) but last year the report was release 60 days after the year end. I hope it will be late this time around as well.
Suggestion 3: I like this suggestion in manipulating the data. however can I just use the competitors info just for the comparison in the final year and for conclusion purposes. Or I may have to manipulate all 3 years and do a year on year comparison and analysis.
March 6, 2013 at 5:21 am #119340I have seen pass grade projects with one final year comparison with competitor and drawing conclusion, In this way you will only have to manipulate one year data of competitor to bring comparison to orange with orange and apple with apple. I personally feel that both data manipulation or limitation note are fine(they won’t be reason for failure) However the result would depend on :
1. Proper analysis and evaluation.
2. inclusion of proper models (not more models but what you include explained in detail)
3. Proper referencing with variety of sources. ( every figure, pic, table should be referenced), Harvard style of ref must.
4. SLS should have proof of IT and your reflexive thinking (not descriptive)
5. No spelling and grammar mistakes.
Any minor excuse give marker a reason for failure.

You have giving me some well appreciated clarity.
March 8, 2013 at 4:59 am #119491Hi kenneth, see the industry averages for HP in graph shape, dig the site in detail may be you get figures.

bbMarch 8, 2013 at 10:31 am #119502bassaniobroke your example is great but !!!! we need these for three periods, not only for the last one, also there’s no explanation how they calculated it and there’s no explanation about their methodology of choice of the companies to calculate averages Still, is it possible to get it somehow?
March 8, 2013 at 3:51 pm #119521nati the website I referred can not be used in comparison because its graph and not figures. previously I found on this website industry averages as figures. I have seen RAPs in which company analysis is done for three years but compared with comparator in final year only, but have also seen three years comparison. Haven’t seen industry average comparison yet but how come if we get industry average for last year and we compare with our company’s last year would it impress marker? in few words and under separate paragraph showing that our research is corroborated or better we remain away from this mess and focus on comparison with comparator?

I wanted to choose British airways but its part of a group,Its competitor is virgin I cannot find its financial statements, If I choose Singapore airlines its currency is different. Is it a good company to research on or its best to do with the popular Tesco, Salisbury, M&S etc for Topic 8.
I also haven’t started doing my project, if I dedicate myself can I submit by 20 May or its a bit unrealistic?
April 12, 2013 at 6:27 pm #122295dont go for novel ideas, marker reserves no extra mark if you choose difficult company or topic, he acts like robot acting on remote control fed with marking scheme and he has to fail 50% because other wise the degree would become piece of paper. remember me in your prayers.
