Hi,
I would be grateful if you could help me with the below question :
In the year ended 30 November 20X9, Karl sold a machine for $5,800. The machine had been bought for $15,000 in July 20X5. Karl depreciates machinery at 20% per annum on the reducing balance basis. He charges a full year’s depreciation in the year an asset is purchased, and no depreciation in the year of sale.
What was the profit or loss on disposal of the machine?
$344 loss
$344 profit
$2,800 loss
$2,800 profit
As per my understanding, the answer should be $344 Proft however the answer is showing as $344 loss. Any help would be really appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Devina
X5 Cost 15000, depreciation 20% = 3000. NBV 12000
X6 Depreciation = 20% x 12,000 = 2400. NBV = 12000- 2400= 9600
X7 Depreciation = 20% x 9600 = 1920. NBV = 7680
X8 Depreciation = 20% x 7680 = 1536. NBV = 6144
X9 Sale for 5800, so LOSS = 5800 – 6144 = 344.
Selling for less than NBV makes a loss.
Thanks for the quick response 🙂
