For part a where the question requires us to analyse the strain piston considering the internal and external perspective, could I apply the Swot model?

Yes you can always apply SWOT to analyse internal and external factors. However, just using SWOT (unless specifically asked to) does not allow you to show off other models you might know like PESTEL, 5 Forces, resources and competences etc.

The other models can be used to generate ideas for the SWOT analysis.

What is the best model that I can possibly use in this question?

Look at the model answer. I assume the examiner picked the best.
