We only need to do this when there are an even number of periods (e.g. four quarters in a year). The reason is so as to get an average that we can then compare with what actually happened.
Have you watched my free lectures on this, where I do explain the reason?
The lectures are a complete free course for Paper MA and cover everything needed to be able to pass the exam well.
