May 3, 2011 at 8:05 am #81387hi,
please don’t take me wrong but I personally think this ‘exam tips’ approach is wrong and misguiding. Nobody knows what’s going to be examined in the papers so why these tips? Do proper and thorough preparation and you’d be able to write all answers without any trouble. By the use of common sense and know how of the technique of answering audit paper, it can be cleared.May 4, 2011 at 11:05 am #81391Dear Sids,
Yes, I agree with you. There is no shot-cut, have to study all topics of the F8, my lecturer also told us like this undestand the concept use common sence to answering all the questions.

Tips normally come a few weeks/days to exams. Incidentally, I don’t use tips. If you base your study on tips, you will be disappointed. You have to read the entire syllabus and then go through questions,it’s the only sure way.

I am also sitting in June and doing some past papers. Why is the pass rate so low though?

May 12, 2011 at 12:58 pm #81396Hi
I can tell you why the pass rate is so low. I sat this exam in june 2008 and got 49%! I then sat it in Dec 2010 and go 48%. To be prefectly honest I was sitting two exams at both times and did not give enough time to this exam. I am sitting it in June 2011 and I fully intend to pass this time!

Hi rumble,
you can say it can happen to a very few who can’t manage to take time for 2 subjects but generally speaking this is not the case. People give 4 papers in one attempt and they pass too. Why? because they study from the beginning, put their 100% effort in, giving proper time to all subjects, proper scheduling and correct studing strategy helps them in clearing the papers. You too should review your studing strategy, maybe you’re putting all efforts that are required to pass the papers but in the wrong direction? It’s time you should sit and search for the mistakes you’ve committed while preparing for the papers. That’d definitely help you a lot.
All the very best!May 12, 2011 at 5:11 pm #81399Hi Sids
You are quite right, what I forgot to mention was that I have two very young demaning children, a demanding job and I did this via distance learning, Not excuses but simply a fact of my life! But wouldn’t change it. What happened simply was that I just did not have the necessary time available for the subject and what time that I did have was split between two papers.
This time, I was able to take a night class and I am going to focus completely on exam papers and question and answers and only sit 1 exam and fingers crossed it works!! Hopefully 3rd time lucky..Your comments about studying is quite right, I never ever sat down and went through the exam papers and practised by exam technique. But I plan to rectify this as I feel this is where I fall short. Give me mathematical paper anyday over a theory based paper!
How is your study going? What do you do now with 4 weeks to go?

May 12, 2011 at 5:32 pm #81400hi rumble,
aha so this is the thing, I salute you for your efforts and i mean it..
what i’d suggest you is, if you have the knowledge, start solving the exam kit (bpp) it would help you gaining confidence in solving the exam type questions. Incase you don’t have the knowledge, grab kaplan text book, read it carefully in approximately 3 days, and then go for the kit. Before solving any particular question, first analyse it in your mind, do not look at the answers. Make the relevant points, try answer it on your own first, then look for the answer. You’d not be able to answer correctly in the first go, but what benefit you’d gain out of it would be that your minds windows would start opening and you’d start think like an auditor with an inquistive mind. This really helps and believe me it gives great pleasure when you know your answers match with those of the examiners!May 13, 2011 at 11:39 am #81401Thanks Sids, I will definitely put your advice into practice starting tonight. I feel at this stage that I should know this book inside and out, but its amazing how much you actually miss out when you are reading…I usually get to the bottom of the page and find that my mind has wandered to wondering if the washine machine has finsihed the cycle yet!!!… and then I have to start at the top again. I will read it again, make a few notes as I go along as I find that in an exam I can usually see my notes (in my head…. ahem!)and am able to re-write most of it.
I have printed all the exam questions from the ACCA website and also all the technical notes that have been written recently. Funny how an article was written last November on Ratios and then it came up in the exam. Will make sure I have these articles covered just in case.
Came across another website yesterday PQ Magazine and they had a few articles that I found quite good also.
Need to pass this exam this time. Sat F7 in Dec. Got 67%. Couldn’t believe as I wasn’t going to sit it, the night before I got myself in a fluster over an exam question that totally knocked my confidence but I decided I would give a go anyhow not even thinking I was in with a chance of passing. Goes to show that you just never know!
Have you passed first time with all your papers to date?May 13, 2011 at 4:05 pm #81402Hello rumble, hope you’re doing well….
ohh the washing machine part was a bit funny but this is how mothers are so nothing unnatural..
You already have plenty of days left so you really don’t have to worry much, just proper and good planning would do, as I mentioned earlier.
Give yourself a target that you’d finish reading these chapters during a day and ‘do’ try to finish it off, it’d make you gain confidence over yourself plus you’d cover the syllabus soon and would be left with plenty of time to revise. The notes making part is good and Im sure you do remember them in the exams, try doing that..don;t take too much burden on yourself…
Yes, I did in the first attempt cause I never left ‘everything’ for the last hour, I hope you get what I mean.. but since these exams are tough, I hope and pray we all pass them in the first attempt too – God willingMay 16, 2011 at 4:25 pm #81403Hi Sids, rajiv147, thanks for that. I looked at a few exam questions & answers at the weekend and have also started to re-read the book for the 3rd time in 3 years, and also read the examiners reports. Have a good feel for what she is looking for. I will be over the next few weeks doing alot, alot of exam questions!
I appreciate the sympathy and the support, and it is good to talk to other people doing these exams. Talk soon.
