Hi, I watched all F5 lectures and they made my studies a lot easier and I would like to thank you all for that.

However, when I started to practice using the way thought in Open Tuition’s lecture to answer Open Tuition’s Revision Notes and Kaplan’s current Exam Kit the answers for Planning and Operational variances are different as different figures are used to calculate the answers.

Would you be kind to help me to clarify which figures should be used to answer the questions.

Material price planning and operational variances – according to lecture we use actual total material usage figure in both, but my understanding from practice is when calculating price planning variance we use actual total material usage figure and in operational price variance we take the actual production and multiply it by std usage per unit to work out the actual total material usage figure. Please advise which is correct.

Material usage planning and operational variance – according to lecture we multiply by original std cost per unit in both, but my understanding from practice is when when calculating planning usage variance we multiply by original std cost per unit and in operational usage variance we multiply by revised std cost per unit. Please advise which is correct.

    Thank you.

I don’t know if you meant to post this to F5 or P5.

The examiners do not care which approach you use: they are relieved you can use any!
