    Hello John.
I have successfully passed my CBE F1-F3. I am planning to tal F5 in June ’15. How is paper based exam different to CBE’s. What are the challenges and what do I need to focus on?
As it is different level, does it require more time & effort. Is it a really big step up from the Knowledge level.
    Thank you

The paper based exam for F5 is not so different from the CBE’s, except that it is a 3 hour exam and obviously you have to write on paper as opposed to enter on computer!

Section A is 20 multiple choice questions, and Section B is 5 longer questions – some of 10 marks and some of 15 marks.

It is a step up from Paper F2 (it continues from F2) but as to how much effort is needed rather depends on how easy or difficult you found F2.
One big difference is that there is much more testing that you understand what is happening rather than having just learned rules – about 50% of the exam is calculations, the other 50% being proving you understand by (for example) being able to explain limitations, advantages, disadvantages of various techniques.

You cannot focus on particular parts of the syllabus – it is vital to go through everything because the exam makes sure that most of the syllabus is examined each time.

This introductory lecture explains the nature of the exam and suggests how best to study for it:
