    Hi,

I would like to know the instances where i should use Pestal, Swot or any environmental analysis or Corporate appraisal methodology in case a scenario is provided and no specific model is specified by the examiner.

In other words when should i use
    Pestal
    SWOT
    Porters 5 forces

    in an answer!!!

    Thank you

You can use these when the questions contains something that lets you. So:

If a question states that the economy of the country in which the company is operating is beginning to pick up and that there have been technological breakthroughs in that sector, you can say something like:

“A PESTEL analysis suggests that the economy will be improving anf that technological changes present the company with opportunities.”

You don’t have to mention the other P, S, E, L bits of PESTEL.

If the questions talks about competitors, customers and potential entrants, 5 Forces might be useful.

SWOT can be a fall-back as it always works for corporate appraisal, but being able to mention some other models like 5 Forces reinforces the points you are making.

thank you Gromit for that technical guide. I would have written more detailly on all the aspects of PESTLE and wouldn’t have thought to merge some points about the 5 Forces when doing a SWOTS analysis

Whatever you do don’t explain these models (unless specifically asked to, which is unlikely). At this level is is applying models to improve performance that’s required.
