Hello, John. The following is the exact copy of Kaplan exam kit (2016 edition).

    Q40
Environmental costs are difficult to deal with for an accountant. Which of the following is NOT a reason for this?

    A Costs are often hidden
    B Costs are mostly minor
C Costs are often very long term
D Accounting systems rarely split off these costs automatically

The answer is supposed to be D.
Does it mean that accounting systems usually split off environmental costs automatically?
My understanding is that it is very difficult to identify these costs. How do they split them off automatically? Is D a correct answer?

    Many thanks

The answer is not D and I am puzzled why Kaplan shows that as the answer.

Accounting systems rarely split off these costs automatically and therefore it IS a reason why the costs are often difficult to deal with.

The correct answer is B – the costs are not mostly minor, and even if they were minor it would not be a reason for it being difficult to deal with the costs.

Thank you Sir. I cannot agree more to you. That was exactly what I thought. There are a number of puzzling answers in this exam kit.

You are welcome (and it does seem puzzling).
