    Words should be given their ordinary meaning.

    Words should be given their ordinary grammatical meaning unless the meaning is manifestly absurd.

    Do the above two statements mean the same thing.

    Do the above two statements fit the definition of literal rule.

    What is the difference between ordinary meaning and ordinary grammatical meaning and in their implications.

    No, yes and …

    Ordinary meaning is as defined in the OED

    Grammatical meaning … because English is such a rich (and often confusing language!) it is sometimes necessary to extend the ‘ordinary meaning’ principle

    The word ‘set’ has 170 different meanings within the OED so to apply the ‘ordinary meaning principle would potentially lead to immense confusion and utter nonsense

    So we need an extension to the principle that eliminates large parts of that confusion

    OK?
