    Halo Mike

Could you be so kind to advise me on my prparation/study for P7 exam in Dec 17.

I have passed in June 17 sitting P5 (only 57 marks but very happy to pass at my first attempt) and for a first time I was preparing to an exam mainly with OT lectures and notes plus acca past exam papers and an old BPP revision kit, not attended any classes. This made me confident enough to decide to do the same with P7 (it is my last acca exam to conquer before I qualify).

I have decided to choose P7 purely because F8 was my highest score exam (84marks), the only problem is that I did it about 5 years ago (i tend to take only 1 or 2 exams a year due to difficult personal circumstanses, but passed all my exams first time) and I probably remember nothing from that exam plus I never worked in audit. My worry is- is it enough to watch the P7 OT lectures and study your notes together with approved provider Revision Kit, or should I go back and refresh F8, F7 and P2 (took P2 exam March 16 got 66 marks, but I tend to forget very quickly a lot of knowledge learnt so I feel i would need to refresh). I know that with P5 OT lectures and notes the revision of topics from previous exams was already included in P5 material prepared by OT, is it a case with P7? If not please can you suggest the best approach for P7 exam?

Your guidance on the above would be greatly appreciated, I usually put my head down and study hard 2 months prior to exam but start looking at the paper notes 3 months prior the exam. I plann my study and try to stick to it, as I am single, working mum of two, with no support from other parent. I tend to spread my study (1-2 hrs a day with couple days in the week taking off and not studying at all). Can I also purchase a revision kit that is for exams up to June 17?

I really am opened to your suggestions and by the way I am very pleased you are lecturing P7 (all OT lecturers are great but you are my favourite). Sorry for my lengthy post.

“a revision kit that is for exams up to June 17?”

No problem – just make sure that it has the revised audit reports in there. If it hasn’t, there are some good articles on the internet covering the new format and additions and the course notes are updated (though the lectures aren’t yet)

F5 and P5 are both taught by John so the F5 revision in P5 is the same John with the same approach

F8 is taught by Ken and P7 by me so we have different approaches and different style

    Same with F7 and P2 – F7 by me and P2 by P2D2

I can think of no good reason why you wouldn’t want to refresh F8, F7 and P2!

As for general preparation specifically for P7, try this for 4 weeks:

    – open your revision kit and read it, from start to finish, question, answer, question, answer, question, answer, question, answ…. and keep doing that, reading the book from start to finish

    – when I say “read” that’s exactly what I mean. Don’t try to learn. Don’t try to memorise. Just read

    – pay attention to the way in which the specific question requirement is addressed

    – notice how many different points are raised in the answers

    – reflect upon the professionalism of the answer

    – and read too:

    examiner’s reports

    the last 10 technical articles

my exam technique article on the P7 home page

the exam technique article on the P3 (yes, P3) home page “From a marker’s perspective” – this article repeats the advice from my own article but it may reassure you to know that the advice is not mine alone but is supported by no less a person that a member of the P3 marking team

    – but, most of all, read that book over and over again and again until 18 August and then post again for the remainder of the advice on how to tackle P7 and we’ll work on exam technique

    OK?
