    Hi Mike,

In the long questions, say I do a working and then cross it out because I think it is incorrect, and I do an alternative working which I believe to be correct.

Will I get any marks if it was the crossed out working that was in fact correct?

    Thanks

Why cross it out? If it’s incorrect, it’s incorrect and the marker will not give you any marks.

What you are asking is “Will I get penalised for trying to do the marker’s job and doing it wrong?”

The answer is ……. don’t cross it out!

Basically, anything crossed out is not marked by the marker so even if there’s only a tiny chance of it being correct, leave it in there and do the second version as well, and leave that in there as well.

    Thanks Mike,

So say in the exam I can’t remember if ROCE is PBIT/CE or CE/PBIT, I should write both down and calculate both and I’d get the mark?

And to generalise, if I am certain that I have narrowed an answer down to 2 options, I should write both down. But surely there is a limit to how many times I can do this because the marker will say ‘this guy is just chancing his arm at anything’ ?

Yes, basically. Remember, you don’t get marked down for things you’ve got wrong. Only credit for things you’ve got right

Yes, you’re right. But, if you’re not sure about ANYthing, what are you doing in that exam room?

You can only use the technique rarely within a single exam

    Thanks Mike,

It’s good to know the technique is available should I need to use it rarely.
