Thanks guys. This was truly inspiring. I have just registered and was looking at options if I would do tuition or just self-study. And this thread has made me decided to try out doing self-study.

I personally find Kaplan and Emile woolf 1000 times better than BPP as they are concise but comprehensive.

I passed my last paper this
Aug and studied all the papers except the six I got exemptions for myself with just kaplan and bp study material, of the two I would recommend Kaplan particularly for numerical papers like financial reprting, tax and financial mgt. When deciding which option paper to choose I recommend sticking to your strengths and going for audit or performance mgt. If literacy is your stregth, and the papers I mentioned earlier if your number skills are better,
Best of luck with whatever route you guys takeAugust 26, 2014 at 3:37 am #192322I have recently graduated from university with a Pharmaceutical Science degree. After realising this line of field is not for me I have decided to undertake the Acca qualification.
I would like to know what is the best route for someone who has no previous accounting experience and cannot afford to pay the fees for classroom tuition. Would the material on open tuition be suffice to pass the acca exams with no previous experience.
August 27, 2014 at 5:24 pm #192549Jay,
I can’t speak for everyone but i can say that OT lectures and notes as well as BPP revision kit has helped me more than anything else, for the first 5 papers i did purchase both text and kit and use along with OT notes and lectures. As finances got tighter i followed the OT tutors advice and only bought the kit.
I can say thought that with all the stuff you have going on to only tackle one paper at a time two at most. Most persons blame ACCA for failing and they have to resit an exam because they did not have enough time to devote to papers.
Believe me when I say that if you put in the time to cover everything and practice ALOT, then you can pass. and before others bash me for not blaming ACCA I will say that i failed F4 with 47%, F5 with 44% and F8 47%, then passed each at the second sitting after better understanding the requirements of each paper.
You can have all the best resources (tutors, books CDs, mentors) but nothing beats practice, practice, practice. and not swot but understand and be able to apply knowledge.

February 1, 2015 at 8:40 am #224587hello sir,
i,m trying to study both kaplan+bpp text for the exam thoroughly, but one of my friend suggested me to study only kaplan as its easy and in detail for f3,now could u please recommend anyone or should i go for both of them?and also tell me will it be beneficial to practice both kits(bpp and kaplan) or just one?thank you
February 5, 2015 at 10:55 am #225324The Alkemist story is truly inspiring. Thanks for the post. How many courses at professional level were you doing per one exam sitting!! Any response will be highly appreciated!
February 8, 2015 at 2:23 pm #226822I am affiliate now.
I got exemption from F1, but all the other papers I have studied with OpenTuition lectures and notes, plus BPP e-text and e-kit. I never really read the whole text book, but used it as supporting material if facing something really difficult in practice kit.I took 2 papers in each sittting, except once I sat 3 papers at a time. Every single paper I have passed on first attempt, and my marks have been between 53 (P2) and 78 (P3). I work full time and have 2 kids.
I would like to thank OT team for this amazing website, and encourage others to self study as well. There is really no need to pay the horrible tuition fees.

I self-studied for ACCA starting in 8/7/2012, on the day I started my career in accounting, as a trainee. Prior to that day, I knew nothing of accounting, even its most basic double entries. I could still remembered myself being asked what is the double entries for a credit sale and I couldn’t answer that.
Using only Opentuition notes, online lectures and past papers, I passed F1 to F4 in December 2012 sitting. I was promoted and my salary increased as well, working then as an audit assistant. In June 2013, I took F5 to F8 (for F6, I used a local textbook), again relying on Opentuition and past papers, I passed. Then, in the coming December 2013, I sat for F9, P1 to P3 and I passed again. I must say that I have struggled with P2 given my full time job commitment but Opentuition is really great for people who self study. I never miss a chance to recommend Opentuition to others and I hope people who have read this post would as well. In the last December 2014 sitting, I finished my last two professional papers and I become an affiliate. I really appreciate the support offered by Opentuition and I hope Opentuition would continue to attract its attention from people who need it. : ) Wish all the very best in ACCA studies! : >February 12, 2015 at 5:32 pm #228153I started off by paying LSBG £2000 for only 3 papers tuition but than I realized its not worth it as the classes were over crowded n a very busy life…so decided to self study and half way through F papers.

F9 with P1
P2, P3 and P7
P6March 31, 2015 at 4:36 pm #239689i recently started to self study because i attented a study school for a year and the experience was horrible …the lecturers would move at a rapid speed and did not explain it as well as these lectures….i did F1 F2 F3 F4 at the center and only past F1 but i started using opentuition last year and a extra few notes by myself and i saw a tremendous improvement. Last week i attented my F3 exam and past.:) Studying for F2 F5 F6 in December. My understanding is much better and my confident was booster by seeing so much sucess by other who did the same . I just thank God everyday for making me find Open tuition

Is it possible to take the F9 exam along with the first three professional exams during the same exam session?

Thank you very much anonymity. I will definitely try that. Do more students prefer taking P6 and P7 rather than P4 and P5?

suf23, prima facie people are taking those papers as they are the most relevant of what we are doing in public practice; we are mostly working in conventional accounting roles. But that doesn’t mean people working in conventional roles don’t take papers in P4 and P5. It depends on your own interest. Ultimately, you aim to pass these papers to get your ACCA but it’s useful to take those which help your career. 🙂

suf23, you are not lonely when you join this community. 🙂 I believe you have the determination to finish your ACCA by self-studying. The materials (especially the notes) provided by OpenTuition are very helpful; I used all of them for all my papers except for F6, F8, P1, P3, P6 and P7 (I read past year papers only for these papers with the exceptions of F6 and P6 for which I have bought BPP textbooks too. This does not mean you can’t score a first class mark by relying on past papers; if you have time, please read more 🙂 ).

thank you once again! That really did help and motivate me. Are scores in the 60’s decent? and in your opinion, are passing exams or completing PER’s more difficult?June 10, 2015 at 12:36 am #255848AnonymousInactive- Topics: 0

suf23, an absolutely yes. In fact I scored more than that using the materials and lectures on OpenTuition so you can do it too. In my humble opinion, if one asks me which of the two is more difficult, on comparison it will be the exams. You can finish your PERs while you are completing your exams or later. 🙂

thank you so much for all your help and advice! 🙂July 21, 2015 at 3:25 pm #261284How did you stay motivated. I find that I get very distracted! Were you always able to focus? Being honest, I found it difficult to read your whole post, let alone study.
Would you have any tips for how to keep focused?
July 30, 2015 at 10:59 am #262954Thank you very much for your inspiring story .Your story is full of motivation.I am also i self study for P2 .Did somebody can help me get an audio cd for P2. I have used it for P1 it was very very interessing!!!!
I have noticed that i can learn quickly through listen the various subject. Also it gave me the opportunity to learn everywhere.
I want to get the link or address of the publisherAugust 8, 2015 at 7:06 am #266195My motivation primarily came from my several areas
1. I was paying for this out of pocket and it was a huge sacrifice, so I could not afford to fail.
2. I found a group of like minded individuals who were also focused and we met everyday for months to study. Even if it was quiet reading, we did so in each others company.
3. When I started the exams, I designed a plan for what I wanted to achieve and when. I always referred to this plan to determine where I was along my path and where I had to go to next. Once the ACCA exam app came out for Android, I also used this to remind me. It was on my home screen on the phone.
4. Assisting other students, whether while studying with my group or here on OpenTuition also kept me focused as I learned while I taught. - AuthorPosts
