It will help you to read page 18 of our free lecture notes, which explains how to calculate the total shareholder return over a year! (Our notes and lectures are a complete course for Paper F9 and cover everything needed to be able to pass the exam well.)
In the BPP question, the share price at the start of the year was 3.50 – 0.75 = 2.75
Therefore the return = (0.25 + 0.75) / 2.75 = 36.4%
