    Hi there,

I am aiming to sit LW(Eng) at the start of September. I have just started to study and finding the study text quite hard going, it is incredibly detailed & I feel it will take me some time to get through it.

I was reading some of the questions on the LW Forum, and I note that some of the tutor suggestions are to avoid the study text altogether, and to focus on the OT notes & lectures, and get stuck into the questions in the revision kit quickly.

For the last 3 exams I read the entire text, and I have to say it really took a lot of time, probably the majority of the time I spent on the exam preparation process. I only really got into the questions a few weeks before my exam. Now I did pass the 3 exams with good marks, but I am now wondering if my method is wrong, and I am spending too many hours just getting through the study text. It is so detailed I’m not sure how much is actually going in. Sometimes I feel I am just trying to get through another chapter to get to the end of the book!

At the end of the study process I use the passcards to revise, which I do find very handy, do all the questions in the revision kit, twice if I have time, and I purchase 3 exams from the ACCA website, generally a few days before the exams, and this has worked for me.

I am just really looking for some guidance please, what do you feel is the best approach? I am a bit cautious about avoiding the study text altogether, are the OT tuition notes enough? I find the OT lectures excellent and they have really helped me in the previous 3 exams so had planned to watch them anyhow.

    Any advice is much appreciated!

Michelle, I’m reluctant to advise you to change a winning formula (congratulations on your previous three results) but I stand by my advice given on countless occasions on this forum in the past.

Read the notes (just read, don’t try to memorise or learn, just read) from start to finish – it should take no more than 2 hours. If you can do that once each week before the exam that will be a major step towards exam success

    Watch the lectures

Get hold of a revision kit and start answering questions. Over and over again and again and again

Don’t write your answers in the revision kit – write on a separate piece of paper. In that way your subsequent efforts will not be influenced by your earlier efforts

There is effectively a limited number of ways in which questions can be asked in the law paper and by going through a revision kit multiple times you will cover substantially all those questions

Your early efforts may score you only, say, 20% (in theory you should be able to score around 25% by selecting answers at random) but, when you next visit those questions, you should be up around 40+%

    Next time 60+%

    Then ????

Of course, when you hit a problem, post on this forum and I shall get back to you but I have to say that I agree whole-heartedly with you – that study text is hard going

    Hope this has helped
