    Is there a list anywhere of indicators of which model to use for different types of question? For example, these situations direct me towards certain models to use:

    * Setting up business in a foreign country – Porter’s Diamond.

    * Entering a home market – Porter’s 5 forces

    * Outsourcing – Harmond’s process-strategy matrix

    Just wondering if there’s a fuller list or article somewhere that shows the tell-tale signs in a question for which model to use on it.

    Really the model to use depends on the information given in the question and sometimes the requirements. However, common pointers are:

    Environment = PESTEL
    Competitive environment = 5 forces
    Resources = M words
    Adding value = value chain
    E-Business: consider 6Is
    Marketing = 4/7 Ps
    Portfolio = BCG (esp if market shares and growth are given) and parenting style
    Competitive advantage = generic strategies
