Hi
So this may seem a silly question but what is the best way to learn for these exams.
I have sat F5 to F7 and passed.
However I am currently studying for F8 and F9.
I have been on revision and taught courses for both and I have been through exam questions – but when I say been through them I’ve had to look at the answers a lot for the written elements.
I know people say practice questions but if you don’t know the material – ie the written stuff – is that still the best way to go about trying to learn for the exams.
I have watched videos for F8 again as well.
I’m really stuck and I would really like to pass but I just don’t know how to go about it.
If I keep doing the questions, reading and understanding but not learning learning to me doesn’t seem right.
I understand the subject but I find it difficult to memorise the written stuff and i can’t make notes. Please can somebody give me any advice.
Thank you
May 7, 2014 at 5:21 pm #167809I am doing F8 also. You need to acquire an interest in the subject to be able to do well. It applies as well to all the papers, but F8 is a bit different because even if you learn the entire book, you could be sure to get maximum points in the first part of the question which is book knowledge, but for the other parts carrying more points you’ll have to relate any knowledge that you have to a practical scenario and you might be completely off the mark even if you know every words of the text. This is the most difficult aspect of this exam. What you might do is try to put yourself in the shoes of an internal and external auditor when tackling a question. Imagine you are in a store when a stock count is taking place, what practical steps you should take so that items are not counted twice for example. Or employees who clock cards and are paid overtime are paid only what they are due? Think along these terms and if you can relate knowledge with common sense you will do well.

Thank you for your quick response and for your guidance and advice. I will try what you have said.
Thank you
May 7, 2014 at 7:45 pm #167819I did this exam in Dec and thought I passed it as there was nothing on the paper that i did not know and could give valid points for. i came out of the exam with a 47.
reading the examiners review i realised that even when you correctly identify the issue the explanation of that issue has to follow through or you will only get half the marks required. I am told that both audit papers are marked hard so you have to really practice a lot of questions.
hopefully my second attempt will be a pass. best of luck to all that will be sitting this June.
May 8, 2014 at 3:03 pm #167925For me personally, for F8 – I have experience in real life auditing (20yrs!) and so I was able to just read the notes and apply existing knowledge.
F9 however – I found this to be the most difficult exam in the whole qualification!!
Thankfully I relied on home study from a Kaplan Textbook, but to be fair I think that it was Johns Lectures that got me through. So for my advice on F9 – Go through Johns Lectures and Revision lectures – they are invaluable!!
Very Best of luck!
