Hello everyone,
Last week a friend called offering me the opportunity to become the accountant of his start up. His business is based in Dublin and employees 10 collaborators. It is related to the technology sector and will soon receive some generous funding from a venture capital firm.
At the moment I am studying for the ACCA, passed F1 to F4 and preparing F5 right now. I am also looking to change job within year end. Now I am an accounting analyst for a big blue chip corpo, but I feel my knowledge is too specific and I miss the big picture.
My prospective duties will be everything related to the financials of the company. From book keeping and treasury, to contract negotiation and financial modeling.
My question is: do you think could it be a good opportunity from the learning perspective? Do you have experience with that? Wouldn’t it be better to stay in an established company which provides you structure and future perspective? Is it valuable to get involved with a startup from the ACCA perspective?
I know my questions might be naive, but it’s really the first time I face such a challenge and I don’t know what to think about it.
Thanks in advance!
Cheers

In a big company, you tend to specialise in one area but there may be opportunity to move around the different areas to gain additional skills.
