Hi, Got 58%. That’s great for me, off to affiliate. Done & dusted now. Those nights of torture and the cold. Praise be to God in Heaven!!!
To those who didn’t make it, my advice keep on keeping on, you will eventually make it. It’s not impossible, but that extra mile will work wonders for you.
February 10, 2014 at 9:33 am #157622Hi guys. Well done to those that passed. But please give a hand of help and assistance to those trying to pass as well.
People have been asking on this forum for that extra tip or advice or something to do differently that will help them pass but none of those that passed has said anything technically helpful…remember open tuition gave you an opportunity to get to where you are please do same for those that need advice for p6.
What should we do extra or what technical things did you do that earned those extra marks, what is the examiner looking for that earns marks apart from just knowledge of the topics.
Please do reply and help the rest of us. Many thanks for your time.

hcj08e,
I want to believe those that haven’t replied didn’t because its really difficult to say what exactly helped you pass. Let me say what I think helped pass the Ps. I am full time employed Finance Manager, a wife, two kids at school, run a small business on the side. I didn’t have formal classroom lesson, so I taught myself. My advise would be:1. Spent as much time studying as possible. Start as soon as the results have been announced, for at least 2 hours a day, during the week and on weekend do 3 hrs either Sunday or Saturday, with the aim of finishing the syllabus 4-6 before the exam.
2. Start revising no later than 4 weeks before exam.During this time do all exam questions, mock exams and those in the book. Opentuition provides a forum where you can even ask the tutors some questions. You must do at least two exams under the exams time limits to train yourself.
3. In the exam time yourself. Allocate your time according to the number of marks per question. A 30min question will be 30 x 1.5min = 45min. When this time lapses abondon the question and tackle the next one, so that you at least attempt all of them and gather as much mark as possible. I have been battling with this too.
4. Finally, the articles that are published per paper are also important, they are available online even if you haven’t received your student accountant mag. The time issue above is in one of them titles how to pass the Professional Papers. In this paper start with the two questions in section B that aren’t time consuming and end up with Section A and write as much as you can but straight to the point.
5. One last thing that helped me pass P3, I ran out of time and still had a lot to write. I just wrote points and less elaborating, wasn’t even thinking it will help but it did.I hope this helps.
Good luck people.February 10, 2014 at 11:55 am #157688@ simelanempumie
Many thanks and very useful info. I am in similar situation family, finance manager in public sector etc. This was 1st attempt at my last paper P6. So determined to push this further next attempt. Are their any specific advice for P6 in particular apart from the above. As you know the Professional papers take a bit more technique.
Good if anyone else can add to this?

@hcj08e
The technique part is difficult.
P6 is above giving out advice on the best legal tax options. You first have to understand the scenario given, weigh all options available and then advice which one will save most tax.Like in a loss making situation a sole trader has various options to relieve the loss, but you must understand which one saves the most tax, which one has a quick cash flow impact and which one makes business sense. For instance a business that’s closing down cannot be advised to carry forward the loss. So an understanding the taxes affecting each scenario is important, you do an elimination process and dwell on the ones applicable. This is p6 is trick but nothing bit plenty of practice from the mock exams, past papers as there get to understand how to tackle different scenarios. The answers are there as a guide how you should answer.
That’s my advice.

Many thanks for this. This is the kind of help am talking about. Am sure many will find it useful though it may seem the obvious but equally forgettable when dealing with a tactical paper as this. Please if you do remember any more do please write up. And possible may be coming back with more q’s.
All the best and God Bless!

@ Ilaha
The Kaplan text book worked well for me, you get to register book on their site, you have access to an electronic copy wherever you are as long as you can connect to the internet. You don’t have to carry the hard copy with you. You get to access more information and can do self testing on line after some chapters.February 11, 2014 at 12:23 pm #158061AnonymousInactive- Topics: 1

how did u manage to pass with this margin
February 12, 2014 at 4:18 am #158331I managed to pass my final paper P6 at 69 marks on my 3rd attempt. The first attempt was at 41 marks and second attempt at 49 marks – both these attempts – while doing revision I just copied the answers from the revision kits after reading the questions. I would say a bad technique for question practice.
So for my 3rd attempt – I followed the advise ie read the questions and try to attempt to answer the questions on my own first without looking at the answers at the back – slowly I developed confidence and wherever I made mistakes after comparing my answers to the kit, I thoroughly revised my notes again where I lack knowledge and practised doing the question again without looking at the answer so I understand the application of the technical knowledge.
I used ebook of BPP revision kit and Kaplan’s question kit to practise.
In the exam , I did Q1 from 3.15 to 4.15pm , then Q2 from 4.15 to 5pm, then Q3 from 5 to 5.35pm and Q5 from 5.35 till 6.15pm – ie I followed the time strictly and never missed out doing all parts of the questions. So touched all parts of the questions!!!
Remember the most important rule – answer EVERY BITS of requirement the examiner ask like for example state the date of CGT payable and you skip this , then you lose marks or state whether the adjustment is correct/not correct and tell why it is so – and you state the adjustment is correct/not correct and did not tell why, then you lose marks!!
End of the day, you will simply pass by just fulfilling EVERY BITS of the requirements the examiner ask (tiny marks here and there will soon add up to contribute to the overall total of your marks) but you must have the correct technical knowledge and enough question practise under exam time to pass.
So, to all those who fail , don’t lose hope because you can pass if you believe you can!
