Hi ,
Congrats to those passed P5, global passing rates for June14 only 29% ,which is lowest compared to other optional papers. For those passed P5, can share your tips or past workings ,wonder how to answer in order to get pass , have been trying for many times and no intention to change to other optional paper due to time constraint.
Below are the approach that i have tried by far but still failed my P5 :
1) Read examiner comments understand common error(s) that student always made.
2) Practice past year question
3) Read articles published by acca
4) Retake again the course.(attended twice with different lecturer)
5) Take more work leaves , to get myself fully prepared for the exam.I need some guidance really don’t mind online tuition as long as someone can help to correct me after reviewing my answers / workings. I really in doubts how to get marks in the exam and what the examiner want indeed.
Thanks in advance.

Hi I pass with 75% at first attempt. Perhaps I can give some guidelines on the ways to answering P5 questions:
(1) You have to maximise the use of scenario based information. When I answered the question, I will try to link back to the scenario so that the marker will see my effort to link back to the case and not just merely answering without referencing back.(2) For every point you write, try to use the scenario case name even you are just writing a general point.
For example, “XXX Company is currently operating a traditional absorption costing system and therefore moving to a beyond budgeting system may require substantial cultural change.”(3) Read the question for more than one time. For June 14 sitting, (1a) evaluate the current performance report. Actually the examiner is trying to give hints in the scenario (…there is no need to evaluate performance). So obviously examiner want us to comment on the report itself, not performance.
(4) Do every past year questions by the current examiner and compare your answer with the model answer. Read the examiner comments on areas where candidates perform badly.
(5) Do not over-rely on exam tips. Although my lecturer tips are 90% accurate for this sitting, I still cover all part of the syllabus at least once.
(6) Do study BPP textbook. Although the content in BPP textbook is lengthy, but I found BPP has the most comprehensive coverage of the syllabus compare to Kaplan, GTG and etc.

What does Alex want? I think he is a sadist whose work is to make us fail all the more.
I wonder what pride is it to him when his subject lags behind with the lowest pass rates all the time? June sitting was too much of English testing than P5 principles. Am devastated. For me my failure is thanks to the examiner. I love P5, when i study it i understand it, and actually can even apply it at my work place, but whenever i go to the exam room, i find nothing related to what i studied, and even whats related, its just too twisted for me to understand what the examiner wants.
And to the ACCA, we are your clients? we spend our hard earned money on this course, and personally i am dissatisfied with P5 examiner.August 11, 2014 at 7:02 am #189313Pass with 62 marks! My fourth attempt. Now I’m affiliate! Good luck to everobody and don’t give up if fail.

Did your school provide online tuition? Hope do hear from you soon.Hi. I study in LSBF Singapore although I am from Malaysia. LSBF do provide online tuition but I am not sure whether it is as good as face to face learning as lecturer is different. May I know where are you from?
August 11, 2014 at 1:40 pm #189391Congratulations to all who passed, commiserations to those that failed. I passed first attempt with 67%.
My main advice to those who failed is that the majority of the exam is word based not number based. This exam is supposed to be at post graduate level. Therefore for these questions I believe you should be answering with a well written balanced arguments that convince the examiner you understand both sides of the evaluation before reaching a conclusion.
I tried to write 2 / 3 sentences for each mark of concise, grammatically correct answers with detailed reference to the scenario given in the question. Lists of bullet points, part formed sentences would not get you marks in a postgraduate level exam.
I believe the subjective nature of some of the questions can be used to our advantage as it gives us scope to write in detail about the scenario and convince the examiner you have a good business understanding and understand the issues raised.
Good luck to everyone re-sitting this, this is just my opinion but hope it helps.

Interesting to see an email from acca today on the pass rates. They are putting down the continuously low p5 pass rate to a lower proportion of students studying p5 with learning providers (kaplan/bpp etc) than on other exams.
Still not sure how i passed ! Think i was very lucky that this sitting was quite unusual for the examiner and did not use many/any models. My advice to those (re)sitting in December would be to regard the June paper as a blip and to assume the December sitting will still require detailed knowledge of ALL models as this is the core of Alex Watts style to date.

I agree with you there is a need to study all performance management model in details as this is the core for p5. Indeed it is weird that June 14 sitting doesn’t have any model but I am happy with this as I am not very good at the models.

wow, passed on 52% , finally an affiliate, extremely ecstatic because, for me, this was by far the toughest P5 exam, no models, too generic. i thank Allah that now im an affiliate, it was a sure fail for me when i left the exam hall, it’s a miracle.. to the ones who didn’t pass just hang in there you WILL get through !!
August 12, 2014 at 2:17 pm #189633Passed 59%. I am now done, good bye books
August 12, 2014 at 11:00 pm #189751I am sick and tired of P5.
I fail every time with 45 or 46. I failed for the fifth time now, this is my last paper remaining and I feel like doing physical harm to Alex Watt!! Is this an ACCA paper or a test of how well you can decode his code language question requirements?? June 2014 was the most vague paper I have ever seen, he hardly tested any of the syllabus! No performance models, no transfer pricing, no corporate failure, no activity based costing….
I am fed up of the ACCA and was thinking about switching to P6 Adv Tax. This is a big module and I would need to learn from scratch, probably shelling out for tuition costs.
I am posting this to find out if anyone that knows a recommended tutor in the London area who they know is good on tutoring P5?? Otherwise I am ready to give it up, I have stuck with it as I have struggled with finding the time to learn a new module in my hectic schedule. But enough is enough. Any students looking to pick this one…DON’T!
29% pass rate?!?!? This is just ridiculous!!!!

August 13, 2014 at 7:34 am #189785Plz tell me how should i prepare P5.
Brief Strategy…………?????August 13, 2014 at 2:32 pm #189892finally passed p5 on my third attempt 55%, i am now an affiliate
August 13, 2014 at 3:19 pm #189895Passed P2, P3, P4, P5 First attempt. Now an Affiliate. To God be the Glory
August 13, 2014 at 4:26 pm #189920I failed by just two marks – my second attempt. I was naturally gutted. I scored 15% more than last time, so at least there was a marked improvement.
I understand that the national pass rate in P5 was very low, so I can take some consolation from that.

Final paper Passed 69%. Comiserations to those who weren’t successful.
Those thinking of switching to P4 don’t even give it a second thought, this is a much more digestable paper and the examiner is very fair and does his best to be very clear.Every single question on the paper I’d seen in some form or other from doing passed papers over and over.
In approaching these papers you have to read at least the last 3 examiners reports and the areas where he says people are struggling is what he will test. The last 2 reports hinted that he was going to examine the Performance report format and not the Co. performance itself. My approach was also to just do loads of questions and so I did the list of must/could and should do questions supplied by my tuition provider and when I was finished with that I went through the P&R Kit following the list of must do questions for each chapter in the front of the kit, this tuition provider suggests you review the key areas of the chapter via the pass cards and then attempt the questions.
The last month before the exam I used their revision folder which has the chapters summarised but a little more detail than the passcards. then redo the must should and could do qn list. The final 2 weeks I attempted Past Paper exams each day under exam conditions, which meant I did the same questions over a few times but constantly making sure that the info sticks and reviewing the answer and marking guide to see how the marks are allocated.
The last couple of days I wind down by re-reading the technical articles… hope this approach will help some of you as it worked for me

Scored 61% in P5 at 2nd attempt. I have a grace in doing ACCA exams never failed an exam twice. Even when I did not answer a 10 mark question on VBM. Just answer the question set and practise is the key. Past questions is vital. ACCA is a fantastic professoional course. Now an affiliate.
