First attempt fail 39%. Exam was too time pressured, despite having done weeks of practice questions. Try again in December.
Well done to all who passed, this is not a module for the faint hearted!

Those of my friends who are not able to pass this time rememer that at times Life may knock you down badly BUT the key is to pick yourself up and fight again and again until you succeed. At one time i was so demotivated that i left ACCA with 11 papers knowing that i won’t be able to complete it, but resumed after a long period of time with new determination and ambition and qualified the remaining 3 in first attempt. Keep fighting.

41on first attempt only prepared in less than 2 months was cought up in question 1 didn’t have enough time to do q4, my advice to all making second attempts please do the question you are comfortable with first and don’t worry about finishing numbers you might not get right.

    Hi indianjoe777,

For P4, I was really discouraged after failing on my 2nd try, so for June exam (my 3rd attempt) i sought to clarify all my doubts for each of the syllabus areas. I divided the syllabus into 4 areas and revised the techniques required based on the lecture notes from my tuition provider. The 4 areas are:

    i) investment appraisal – overseas NPV, APV, project duration, modified duration, etc
ii) M&A – valuation methods (FCF, FCFE, P/E ratio, DVM, Net Assets valuation, etc), modes of payment, restructuring methods
iii) options & hedging – Black Scholes Option Pricing model, FX & interest rate futures, options & collars (short-term hedging), swaps (long-term hedging)
iv) written areas – risk management, technical article topics, report format for 4 presentation marks etc

My weakest topic was hedging – OT video lectures & study text were very helpful in explaining how options and hedging instruments worked.

After revising techniques, I attempted past exam questions to get used to the examiner’s style. While reading the questions, I made sure I could identify the topic areas and likely calculation techniques required. Very often in exam, the techniques are not stated but there will be keywords in the question scenario that hint at which techniques to use.

After that, I did questions under exam conditions to train up on my time management.

4 presentation marks – I familiarised myself with the different template styles for report/memorandum/discussion paper/etc by referring to past exam answers. Most commonly tested is a report to the board of directors. During question practice, i also practised how to layout my answers in the report format, with headers, paragraphs, introduction, conclusion, etc.

As easypass mentioned above, during the exam start with the question that you’re most comfortable with. This ensures that you have a higher chance of getting the easy marks and higher chance of passing! In the June 2017 exam, I did Q3, Q4, followed by Q1, as I felt that Q1 scenario was too overwhelming and it’d take me some time to understand it. Q3 & Q4 were more straightforward in comparison. Also, be disciplined and skip the part question once the allocated time is up (1.8min per mark).

There’s more great advice in these 2 threads which I found useful:
    1) https://opentuition.com/topic/my-personal-tips-for-passing-p4/
    2) https://opentuition.com/topic/acca-p4-march-2017-exam-results/page/2/

I only passed on my 3rd try, so I believe that you can pass it too if you keep going! All the best 🙂

    ACCA P4 I passed 56%
I think the only way to pass this paper is to get a good handle on the pillars of the syllabus. You have to know how to do Interest Rate Hedging and Foreign Currency Hedging. A optional question on this subject is highly probable each exam sitting. That’s 25 marks banked.( ‘Futures’, ‘Options’, ‘Collars’, ‘Swaps’). I found open tuition videos really good in this area.
This time I practised questions. Personally, I have struggled to understand ‘valuations’. It was only by doing a number of questions could I see patterns emerging in the answers.
If you use Google and search pdf ACCA p4 notes you’ll be surprised what’s out there.
Again, read outside of the recommended text book. I joined the library at my local university. I would go there and study in peace and quiet and because I was in the company of other students I knuckled down.
Be disciplined, you need to study each night. I know how hard it is you feel tired. You have to keep going. Study the areas your strong at to reinforce the knowledge and then on the weekends when you maybe have more time conquer those areas that your finding harder. I used to sit in the library on weekends from 10am to 5pm. I would reward myself with a beer later that evening.
Don’t throw in the towel ! Keep going ! Good luck !

    Hi,

The only thing I would add to chivonniesweets answer is that if you struggle with the calculations just improvise and analyse your findings even if they are wrong. I definitely got at least 5 marks for my analysis on wrong computations which helped me to get my 50%.
    Good luck and keep fighting.
