There are a large number of models to learn and i would like to ask the following:
General electric matrix is silmilar to BCG so do we need to learn it?
Bowmans strategic clock is similar to Porters generic strategy so do we need to learn it?
Has there been any past paper questions on these?

    Many Thanks

    No 2 models are identical.

BCG uses market share and market growth to chart the business sgements. GE refines it by defining ‘business strength’ as an indicator of ‘market share’ while ‘industry attractiveness’ as the indicator of ‘market growth’. It becomes the core of positioning analysis, that is, resources-based analysis, and the 5-force respectrively. If we have these 2 models in our mind, we know that the resources-based approach and the industry analysis might have limitations when some other things may explain market share and market growth. The models guides you to think logically, comnpletely, and systematically.

For the strategy clock, it extends the Porter’s generic strategy with the pricing strategy. In other wrods, it makes financial analysis possible for the Porter’s model, a potential recipe in exam in future!

I did not make any judgements on any views in my posting. My understanding is that patrots269 rasies a view that the models are similar and you tell the differences with examples. I add my view on their relationship.

‘No 2 mdoels are identical’ is just to tell we can learn the most by differentiating.

General electric matrix is silmilar to BCG so do we need to learn it? BCG is mentioned in the ACCA study guide but the General Electric model is not. I have never bothered with the GE model when teaching.

Strategic clock/generic strategies. Both are mentioned by ACCA and the strategic clock was hinted at (therefore expected) in a case study questions about a ‘cut-price’ approach to business. You should be familiar with both, I think.
