Have just become an affiliate and wondering is it best to apply for membership in January rather than now (have all requirements completed). Would this lead to being exempt from cpd for 2024 instead of applying now and paying membership fee for 2023 also and having to do cpd from January 2024.

Hi there, regarding the membership fee- once they invoice you in November/December, still as an affiliate, you could already complete the requirements and apply as they will not revise this invoice even if you were to become a member before year end. This is what customer service told me.

Hello, thanks for your reply. If I was then to become a member before the end of the calendar year wouldn’t I then be subject to record cpd for 2024 and missing out on the 1 year exemption from the January. It says on ACCA “If you have just become a member you need to ensure that you’re participating in our CPD programme from 1 January after you became a member.”

CPD shouldn’t be regarded as a “chore” – it’s very easy to find verifiable unit for free and record using ACCA’s recording tool. Think about your next CV … if you can put membership 2023 rather than 2024 …

Hi Kim thanks for your response. I’m not looking at CPD as a chore but from the financial element. Yes ACCA does provide some free verifiable units but believe it would be better to wait till January to achieve most value in the one year rule for CPD. I pay my own membership fees and applying now I would be paying membership for 2023 and would also be required to pay for 2024 before 1st January. By waiting I would not have to pay the 2023 fee.
    Hope you see my view.

You are not required to pay two annual subsciptions for one year. For 2023 you have already paid a student subscription – for 2024 you would pay member subscription.

The fee for application to membership is a one-off https://www.accaglobal.com/gb/en/qualifications/accountancy-career/fees/fees-charges.html

    Thanks Kim!

Was lead to believe that I would be required to pay membership fee also for this year

    You are very welcome!
It’s a common misconception – not helped by the fact that the one-off fee is the same amount(!)
