Hi, what and how does 7S’s model link to performance measurement and management?
May 22, 2014 at 5:45 pm #170182Think of the 7s model as a list of what an organisation has to get right to succeed. Skills, structure, etc. If these areas need be right, they need to be measured. So, measure staff skills and compare to what you need. That is really performance measurement
I think some of the As don’t easily lend themselves to this approach. For example, I don’t know how you measure structure.
February 18, 2016 at 12:25 pm #300970Dear Tutor,
This model has not been examined yet. Is it in the syllabus? If I am wrong, I would like to attempt a previous exam question, please advise.
Kaplan have their own question on 7S model, called BRIGGS and I have the following issues on this question:
Part (a) asks for a brief description of the model, for 5 marks. In the solution, they listed all the seven elements and explained each. I would have thought it is not necessary to list all elements because they are required in part (b). I described what the model is about and what it does or seeks to achieve, without going into each element. Would I be penalised in the exam?
Shared values: I understood the diminished trust to be due to the size and complexity, not the hierarchy. To improve trust and teamwork, I suggested individual performance targets should be deived from departmental and corporate objectives and KPIs.
As a divisional structure is introduced and the expansion strategy is introduced, I thought growth would be a CSF in new countries and the relevant KPI would be market share.
The problem of teamwork and trust would still apply to new markets because it would be derived from the host country. And I had teamwork as another CSF and the relevant KPI as divisional strategy and KPIs
Can I please have your comments on my approach.
February 18, 2016 at 3:09 pm #301022It is in the syllabus [Section A 3 (d)]. It has not been specifically demanded by the examiner.
If you are asked to describe the model for 5 marks/9 minutes, then I think you should list the 7Ss with a brief explanation and perhaps mention hard/soft in additino to what it is trying to achieve.
Part (b) is the application of the model.
Your comments about shared values are fine: I’m not sure there is much difference between the effects of size and complexity and those of hierarchy. They often go hand-in-hand.I’m not sure that individual targets would be as effective as team targets to promote shared values and a feeling ‘we’re all in this together’.
You were not asked to suggest CSFs or KPIs. I’m not sure where these fit into the requirement that you analyse the company using the 7S Model. However, I think the examiner woudl be happy for you to go theough the 7S model an applying it as best you can. There are undoubtedly a wide range of comments that could have been made.
I wouldn’t worry about it too much – but know what the 7S model is.
