Can you tell us more about yourself and your work?
I am a Pakistani, and I am a fulltime ACCA student which means I do not work anywhere. Though recently, I started researching and analyzing my recent prospects for a fast food restaurant which would be situated in a densely populated area of offices. Results of the research were appealing and lead me to the idea of making a business plan and development plans. Hope the hard work that I have put into pays off at the end of it all.
Why did you choose ACCA?
I chose ACCA because I didn’t have any other way of fulfilling my dream of becoming an entrepreneur as early as possible. It has proven me that I have chosen the right certification to give me insight of all levels business, business processes, how they are coordinated, accounted for, and how audits are essential to keep 3rd parties assured about the financial status.
You have been a member of OT for a very long time now, how did you find out about this site for the first time?
Well, it was the start of December 2008 examination sessions when I, for the first time, was self studying f5 and f9 this made me realize that I need more than BBP or Kaplan books to keep me motivated to study. On a random day, I thought myself that there must be a site that provides free notes and right then I googled “free notes for ACCA F5 – F9” and wa’lah’ I found OT. That day alone, I suggested my 2 fellow studybuddies to get these convenient and helpful notes from OT for free and they also have audio lectures. Then I couldn’t stop myself suggesting it to others.
OT has many members from Pakistan, do you often meet students online who you know from real life?
No, apart from my friends who come online occasionally.
What resources are the most valuable to you on OT and/or helped you most on OT?
For me, the most valuable resources are the video lectures and course notes because you can see what is written unlike audio lectures where you cant see what is written apart from visualizing it in your head or writing it down. I would also favor study groups or meeting new students on OT because every person has his own point of view which makes you realize how diverse opinions can be useful when applying the knowledge. Also, study groups help you in problem solving, rectifying your errors and mistakes, and keeps you motivated to carry on.
What do you think can improve OT even further?
That’s a tough question. I would say more video lectures would be totally advantageous to the members of OT. Another beneficial to students would be to be able to practice and solve OT’s own practice questions i.e. mock papers.
Are you attending classes?
Currently, I am not attending any classes as I have decided to self study simply though I would still prefer to take classes as these are much helpful than studying on your own.
What other study materials do you use? Anything you can recommend?
Apart from using BPP’s study textbook and Kaplan’s exam kit, I have always purchased either BPP’s or Kaplan’s notecards (passcards). I would recommend everyone to buy notecards. These have graphs, headings, links between other topics, and a complete process of particular topic which helps me understand the whole picture and it makes it easier to memorize and revise.
You were one of the people behind OpenTuition Karachi party, How did this come about?
Well, it was quite straight forward. It was July 2009, I and a friend of mine decided to meet up in Karachi. While we were at it, we also decided to arrange and host a party for OpenTuition’s first anniversary in August. We listed down few places to host the party then shortlisted them till we came to a consensus for the party’s venue. About 25 days before the party, we publicized it on OT’s forum and in chatroom to get as many members as possible to join us. We booked the venue for the party and arranged all the necessary things to make party as successful as possible. By the way this couldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for admin’s forum and financial support.
Do you have any tips for other students who would like to organize a party in their city?
I would say, gather around few members of OT and students in your city and propose to admin about organizing a party. He will be glad to help you out. Also, it would be wise to plan out the party before proposing it to admin i.e. having set out a party theme, number of participants, venue for the party, quizzes and games and so on.
