Morning everyone (can you tell UK based) π…
Personally i am an older student, in a very senior role, i also have a very nice batch of academic qualifications which makes me a bit of an eternal student! Its important for me to keep up to date in management, leadership and of course ACCA so i probably cant stop for a while yet anyway. (I am at the moment thinking about doing a Phd after my final ACCA exam, having just two to complete…glutton for punishment you might say!).
…
Hello Ruth, I think I just found a kindred spirit; you just described my life! If you are happy to connect with me on Linkedin, please let me know.
[I am trying to pass my last paper, P4, and I try the link theory every sitting, it seems rather accurate; unfortunately I failed again π ]
Cheers,

I think a lot of transactional, data and rule based accounting and bookkeeping tasks could be replaced and this could happen fairly quickly.Tasks involving technical judgment and understanding of complex factors are unlikely to be replaced as quickly if at all in the foreseeable future. For example, interpersonal skills will still be required of client managers and of those tasked with communicating information and ideas to those not as versed in accounting and finance. If accounting is broadly defined as being about the creation and measurement of value creation then this is something that requires creative thought and understanding of human behaviour and emotions which is best conducted by human beings.I believe all this was already possible since a long time ago …
As for the interpersonal skills, most of the people who enter the profession is exactly because they prefer minimal interaction with others, thinking accounting will be the safe haven to escape to. So yeah, that will be a challenge.

I was made redundant from one if the Big4’s.Were you part of one of their obscure service lines like Enterprise Solution? Curious only because I once met someone from that side of the firm who was made redundant. Otherwise, I never in my life heard anyone made redundant from audit or tax; those two are always short of slaves.
April 20, 2018 at 9:19 am #448231Plus, why people like to follow the hype?

…Are you guys not worried about this? What’s to worry about? Computers have been around since at least Turing.
Nobody can predict what will happen in the future. So why worry. Accountants have been around forever. Many accounting jobs can already be automated today but they are not. Maybe for reasons of corporate citizenship employers won’t necessarily switch to machines just because they can. Why do I say this, I have been working in accounting roles forever, and see my colleagues do jobs which I could easily program Excel to run. So why they still have a job? And eventhough they perform it poorly and many mistakes while simple and cheap Excel would produce perfect outcome, but employers still keep the humans around. So why worry.
If no more accounting jobs, I am happy to be a farmer or whatever.
Jobs are created by humans. Many jobs are purely made up; you would even wonder what it is people do in these jobs. Why? Just to keep humans employed. So don’t worry, even if no more accounting jobs, new jobs will be made up even if there is no need, just to give people jobs. Why? So there will not be social chaos.
So why you worry?

… Friday night should be the release day and not on Sunday night …I agree, especially if the results are already finalized by Friday.
April 12, 2018 at 1:36 pm #446374@ematete2005 , then I apologise, but, certainly there was someone who kept insisting this is a new theory without first checking the facts; annoying but no big deal so I won’t call him out.
April 12, 2018 at 1:20 pm #446367External audit should not be hard to get into because the turnover is very high. Try applying during peak times and you may get lucky as they are usually short-staffed. If you get into the Big 4, it will look good on your CV, but due to size and structure one GENERALLY learns less than in 2nd tier, plus the sleazy politics may also detract from gaining actual technical skills. So pros and cons kind of thing. From external audit one of the natural progressions is of course, forensics. Can get interesting, but you do realise it can be a risky career choice depending on the assignment? As in, risky to your physical wellbeing, if you get my meaning…have you watched The Accountant? π (I’m only half-joking)
April 12, 2018 at 1:03 pm #446363@ematete2005 , @rhyscallely is right; if you had read through the past threads properly you would see “S vs M” is not new. But I don’t think he meant “lie”, maybe he meant you should not be so careless with the facts and misinform forumers. @tj200 also pointed out “S” would result in a different webpage appearence to “M”, so probably not necessary to go to the extent of checking the source codes.

March 12, 2018 at 1:27 am #442253My third try. I believe I did better than the last two times, and predict either a marginal pass (miracle) or a marginal fail (more likely). Plan to start revising now just in case need to resit, and hope I can be diciplined about it this time.
January 15, 2018 at 1:39 am #429560Failed second time at 29%, marks as predicted. Completed less than 30% of the paper, so no surprise here. The bond question as a Q1 completely threw me off and my mind just stopped.
When I registered for the exam I missed the deadline by about two days and paid a small fortune in late entry fee. At the time, it occured to me the universe was telling me not to sit in December but I went ahead anyway thinking it is my last paper, and missed a very good friend’s wedding that I had been really looking forward to.
Hope to pass in the March exam.
