Good evening everyone,
I am a qualified member of ACCA (UK) since 2024. I have not managed to find an accounting job in a practice and had to take a job in industry.
My dream has always been to build my own clientele, but under ACCA rules, I am unable to do so because I need a practicing certificate. And to gain that, I need to have 3 years of relevant experience under supervision post-qualification. So dead end.
I am very capable and have completed AAT and an accounting and finance degree before pursuing ACCA.
Based on the current legislation, I believe anyone can become an accountant and provide accounting services. Not saying that I support that, but I would like to know if I resign, can I provide accountancy services as I will not be blocked by ACCA rules.
I asked membership team at ACCA and received a rather mixed information, which contradicts their own website and rules in a few instances.
I found a lot of comments and blog posts outside this platform where ACCA members were in similar or same situation and they resigned in order to provide accounting services.
I would like to ask directly if someone was in the same situation in the UK and how they solved it.
And whether if I resign, I can indeed provide accounting services.Thank you.

June 3, 2025 at 6:24 pm #717629Good afternoon Tim,
thank you for your prompt reply.
I already have contacted the membership department and they were very clear. I cannot obtain a practicing certificate without completing 3 years of supervised experience post-qualification.
However, what shocked me is the lack of support when it comes to providing alternative solutions.
I am not of the age when I can start from a junior role in an accountancy practice as all my experience is from industry. All I am getting are regurgitated answers almost copied and pasted from the T&C. When I asked anything out of ordinary, they had to talk to their supervisor and came back with something which is not even in the T&C…for example what I could call myself professionally if I resign.
So I appreciate your reply, but I would benefit from an opinion from members who were in the same or similar situation.
I would be happy to have a private conversation if someone would be open to discuss.
Kind regards,
