Dear Tutor, I am in bit of confusion for my careen here, So the story is my fathers boss approached me when i was at home and offered me job to work beside my father and now my father have a master degree in accounting and he is the head of account if you like. I wanted to work in a reputed audit firm and was close to getting in grant thornton. Idk if i will get the charted accountant level experience here under my father’s supervision. i’d been through much mental pressure and agony before for weeks for time for not getting where i wanted to . idk if my working here will even counted as PER Requirement.
Its a sister companies for airport duty free shops , a watch store , a newly opened Cafe and a investment property ( renting the flats of a building to people ) . I might sound like lot but all i do is just passing journal entries for all of them all day. i am not even sure if that all a accountant is supposed to do.
So please guide me here, Should i leave it here or Work for a year then get in a audit firm ?To be true , I don’t enjoy my work here at all. I look at clock all day and every Next day it feels like hard to keep going and getting bored all day. in morning i wait for lunch time and after lunch time i wait for 5:30 to go home and at end of day i have no energy to do anything else that’s why i am so behind on my studies and spend two months without starting syllabus.
Another reason i hate where i work is i live with my parents as i am Indian and very dependent on parents as i had too many restrictions all my life and completely controlled by parents , I wasn’t allowed to go anywhere alone not even in family gatherings. so i am bad at communication skills and I thought at least after working somewhere unknown places i will get to see new faces but Now for start to end of day i see my father’s face.
i consulted with other people for guidance too but they were simple started blaming me that i have a job and i don’t appreciate it. I guess everyone goes through this period so i thought its better to look after you for the right guidance.
I will be eagerly waiting for your words
Thank you
Warm RegardsOctober 28, 2022 at 10:02 am #670185Here are some things you might think about to help you get back on track ….
PER: Download the guide from here https://www.accaglobal.com/uk/en/student/practical-experience-per.html From what you say it seems unlikely that you will be able to complete all required POs (see page 5) in your current role. But remember, you can complete PER after passing all your exams (i.e. when you become an affiliate).
Job opportunities: See here, for example, https://jobs.accaglobal.com/jobs/kenya – you can set yourself a “Get job alerts” so you can see what opportunities might be available to you in future – even if not at this time. (Though if you “Refine your search” you will see a few jobs advertised as “Entry level”.)
I suggest you should be open to opportunities in business – not just “in practice” (audit) – and to consider internships that will give you experience, even if only for a few months.
I don’t suggest you “quit” work without any plan for moving on. While you stay where you are, perhaps consider how to use lunchtimes to help you with your studies – if you subscribe to Student Accountant https://www.accaglobal.com/africa/en/student/sa.html you can look out for webinars to attend – even if no live, you can watch them on demand later.
Or sign up to the ACCA’s student virtual learning centre https://studentvirtuallearn.accaglobal.com and recap on assumed knowledge for your next exam using the MCQ tests in the Get Ready Modules.
Or watch our lectures (!) – many of them are very short. https://opentuition.com/acca/aa/acca-audit-assurance-aa-lectures
If your work is tedious, then all the more reason to set yourself a long-term goal – break that up into shorter-term plans how you might get there – if that is to pass each of your outstanding ACCA exams, you will need to plan for each. ACCA offers guidance here https://www.accaglobal.com/hk/en/student/exam-support-resources/fundamentals-exams-study-resources/f8/compass-planning.html – and there is a pdf to download if you don’t want to use the online tool.
