I came through a line which confused me.
“Extrinsic rewards are closely related to Herzberg’s Hygiene factors while Intrinsic rewards are related to Herzberg’s Motivators.”
I am not able to get that extrinsic rewards are those which are given by other so they can also be motivators like my boss is giving me bonus so I will be motivated too.
Professor please explain this sentence. Thank you.February 21, 2022 at 3:09 pm #649070Extrinsic = coming from outside, like salary, bonus, good relations with colleagues, nice office to work in. These are hygiene factors ie they have to be got right before motivation can start
Intrinsic = coming from inside, like feeling you are learning and increasing your skills, and also feeling that the job is worthwhile and that you are proud to do it. These are motivating factors.

Herzberg was using the analogy of medicine. Before a hospital can make you well it must by hygienic (clean). Once that is in place it can start treating you to make you better. If the hospital is not hygienic it cannot start to cure you.
In work, unless the hygiene factors are in place, the motivating factors will simply have no effect.
