    Hello all,

    Hope you are well.

Yesterday I took FR exam which went OK. However, when I had only 30 minutes left, ACCA’s version of Excel in section C started crashing. That meant that I could not move onto a second C section question when I planned to as it took significantly longer for me to finish the first one (eventually I gave up on it – it was taking way too much time because of constantly freezing spreadsheet). Because of that, not only that I did not fully complete first section C question, I only had 15 minutes left for my second C section question, which I hardly touched. As a result, I lost many marks. We all know how precious time in ACCA exams is and that one or two marks can separate you from a pass or a fail. I will apply for mitigating circumstances, but that will not guarantee a pass.
This is messing up with all my plans, as this was my last applied skills exam. I had to go on SBR course in January in preparation of March exam. Course starts 4th January, which is before the results day. If I do not go ahead with a course, and pass FR, then I won’t be able to take exam in March. If I go on a course but find out that I failed FR on 17th January, then the course will be a waste of time and money, as I would have to retake FR in March and would delay SBR until June. I really do not see myself taking two exams in one day (FR and SBR exams are on the same day).
My question is that if I book SBR exam for March now and find out that I failed FR and have to retake it, how will day stop me from taking SBR in March? Exam would be booked and paid for. I would much rather start preparing for SBR now and take it March instead of waiting for FR results and have no time to prepare for SBR in March if I passed FR exam.

Obviously you need to lodge a claim for mitigating circumstances https://www.accaglobal.com/pk/en/student/exam-entry-and-administration/exam-results/mitigating-circumstances.html – which would likely get you a couple of marks if you were to have marginally failed based on what you achieved.

Given that you thought the exam OK apart from the last half hour, then you should have attempted at least 80% of the exam – which although that means your pass mark might have effectively increased to 62.5% – I think you perhaps have a good sense of how well you pass these exams based on previous experience.

Another possibility is that if you happened to fail FR, that you could defer this to June rather than SBR. You don’t have to have passed FR to sit SBR, though I believe you would have to enter to sit it (under the progression rules).

Or perhaps there is someone at the college you can speak to? They must have students registering all the time for courses before results are known.
