Hi Kim
I have read on the ACCA website that on completion of CAT and FPER you not only achieve membership but you can also then be exempt from P01 and P02 should you choose to continue with ACCA.
I did not complete CAT before commencing with ACCA, instead I completed ATI (accounting Technicians Ireland) and gained some exemptions from F Papers. Gaining membership of ATI was similar to CAT in that I had to have a qualified accountant sign of performance objectives etc.
More recently I achieved my Fellowship status which was subject to quite rigorous verification of knowledge and experience. As ATI and CAT are both accounting technician qualifications, can membership/fellowship of ATI not be considered for exemption from P01 and P02 as with CAT? It would seem a bit harsh not to, given the criteria for membership is almost identical, as are the exams. The only difference is the country awarding the qualification, and as stated, my ATI was sufficient for exemption from the old F1 and F3 papers, so why not my experience???I would really appreciate your take on this.
Many Thanks
Mrs HOctober 14, 2021 at 10:32 am #637655The “exemption” is because to get FPER, you have to record 12 months experience:
https://www.accaglobal.com/ca/en/student/practical-experience-per/practical-experience-foundation-level.html
“To complete FPER , you will need to:
– achieve 12 months of supervised experience in a relevant accounting or finance role(s)
– complete eight performance objectives (two Essentials and six Technical)
– record your progress online in MyExperience
– have your experience signed off by a qualified practical experience supervisor.”It is not “exemption” but conversion:
“You can convert:
– the two equivalent performance objectives – PO1 and PO2
– 12 months of relevant experience towards the 36 months required for the PER.”Basically you are converting what is recorded under one scheme – to what is recorded under another scheme (with the same awarding body).
But see here https://www.accaglobal.com/ca/en/student/practical-experience-per/36-months-practical-experience.html
“Experience can be gained PRIOR to registering with ACCA, while you are studying for the exams or after you have completed the exams.”Rather than try to claim exemption I think you just need to document the experience you clearly have.

the way you explain it, makes a little more sense, so thank you. It just seems a shame that I have to now duplicate what I have done before. My experience as an accounting technician was recorded and signed off by an accountant to gain membership of ATI, yet I now have to go back and ask them to sign it off again for ACCA, which is a little awkward as I no longer work there. “Conversion” would be much more straightforward.
Anyway, it is what it is, not everything in life is fair so I’ll have to crack on with it.
Many Thanks for your time
Mrs HOctober 14, 2021 at 11:09 am #637663You’re very welcome! I think it boils down to the fact that qualification (exams) and membership (qualification + experience) are different things and are subject to different rules/regulations/industry practices.
You could contact ACCA directly https://www.accaglobal.com/vn/en/footer-toolbar/contact-us.html with your enquiry but I think the long-and-short-of-it will be that it all has to be recorded in the manner of “Myexperience”.
