Que –
Jeeps Co is concerned about its cash position and has taken to delaying payments to some
suppliers in order to ease that problem. Each month the purchase ledger department splits
the total value of invoices for that month into three categories, A, B and C depending on
their importance.
Category A invoices, amounting to $2,000,000, are urgent and paid after 30 days
Category B invoices, amounting to $3,000,000, are less urgent and paid after 60 days; and
Category C invoices, amounting to $4,000,000, are least urgent and paid after 90 days.
Several suppliers have reacted to this by offering Jeeps Co a 2% cash discount if the
accounts are settled within 15 days. Jeeps Co is currently considering whether or not to
accept this. Another supplier, who Jeeps Co now waits 90 days to pay, has been
threatening legal action over the $300,000 currently owed. Jeeps Co feels that some sort of
compromise might be needed.
Jeeps Co’s cost of capital is 12% per annum.
Assume that there are 30 days in a month and that purchases accrue evenly over the year.Ques 1- Jeeps Co is considering the advantage of the early settlement discount from those it
currently pays after:
1 60 days
2 90 days
From which payables should Jeeps take the 2% cash discount? My ques – in this question they have taken 365 days , shouldnt it be 360 days ?
Ques -2 What is Jeeps Co’s payables period (to the nearest day)?
my question – for total payables they have multiple 2m+3m*2+4m*3 (like why ) shouldnt the above amount be taken as absolute , where is it written thats its monthly.?
August 25, 2021 at 4:31 pm #632893Q1 Yes, the should have used 360 days, but it isn’t going to make any difference.
Q2 Each month they receive invoices totalling $9,000 and these are all owing at the end of the month. However they will still not have paid the B and C invoices that were received last month and so these will be owing as well and total another $7,000. In addition they will still not have paid the C invoices that were received 2 months ago and so that $4,000 will be owing as well.
So the total payables at the end of each month are 9,000 + 7,000 + 4,000 = $20,000.
