I got this question from the mock exam.
A company is starting to produce a new product. The first unit takes 42hrs to produce and the company has identified a learning rate of 80%.
How long will it take to produce an additional 7 units (to the nearest hour)?
Average time per unit for 8 units = 42 x (0.80)^(3) = 21.504hrs
Total time for 8 x 21.504= 172hrs
Time for additional 7 units = 172 – 42 = 130hrs
My question was why are they multiplying 0.80 to the root of 3?
It is not multiplied by the root of 3 but to the power of 3.
You can get the answer by 42*0.8*0.8*0.8 in the calculator (=21.504 hours).

ythomas: Abhinav is correct in the it is to the power of 3 and not the root of 3. The reason it is to the power of 3 is that making 8 means doubling 3 times.
Apologies… I meant power of 3…
But how will I know in the exam what power to times it by?
