I’ll give you a bit of background first. I’m 26, finished university around 3 years a go. Didn’t get into the profession immediately as the title states, but here I am.
I’m studying towards my CIMA, I have completed the foundation quals and am on my 3rd qual into the professional paper. UK based.
The position I’m in I an ‘apprentice financial controller’ for a manufacturing company. My concerns at the moment are that I don’t feel like I’m progressing at a fast enough rate, I feel like my knowledge is heavily lacking for the length of time I’ve been with the company for. I don’t really have any tutoring, my manager doesn’t really help I’m left to figure most out for myself.
Example) today I’ve been looking at preparing an accruals journal for month end, and I cannot get my head round the concept of accruals at all, when my foundation papers covered this and some of the professional qual has too..
Where were you at a year and a half into your accounting ‘journey’? Should I be worried that I’m still struggling? I would be grateful for some of your experiences.

With regard to accruals, there is a difference between being able to solve neatly set-out problems in exam questions and doing the same in practice. Although the principles are the same, finding the correct information is much more difficult and this is exactly where I feel your manager should provide help, guidance and coaching.
It seems that you feel your employment is unsatisfactory and that might be do to with the nature of the company and its management culture.
With some exam success and 1.5 years’ experience you should be reasonably attractive to other employers and no harm can be done by investigating other jobs discreetly.
