A narrow span of control would be suitable where
1. The team is not dispersed across a wide area
2. The work is of a routine nature
3. There is little similarities between team members’ work
4. The team is very experienced
(Please explain why and why not. I am indecisive between 1 and 3. Thanks)
1 Span of control is not necessarily linked to physical location. You could have a sales director with a sales manager in each of London, New York and Tokyo. Span of control = three as only three people report directly to the director.
2 Routine implies little supervision needed so wide span ok.
3 If tasks are very different it would be hard to supervise lots of people so narrow better.
4 If staff experiences, little supervision is needed so wide span would work.
