Hi all,
im planning on taking my P1 exam for the first time in December, I started studying around the 1st November, I have been using the on demand learning through Kaplan. I have gone through all the chapters but I feel like nothing is sticky in my head. Is there any tips on how to study and what the exam is like so I can pass 1st time?
Thank you
November 19, 2020 at 1:29 pm #595593I’ve been self studying P1 on and off since March just using the Kaplan text book and open tuition lectures. I’m struggling as by the time I’ve re-looked at other chapters the first I looked at I struggle to remember parts! Or the book wants a different way of how the lecture did it!
I have a full time job and two children so its hard to study sometimes!
I’m trying to have a good push as I would like to book my exam in December but I feel so deflated with it! Is this just something I’ve felt or is it common with this unit!November 19, 2020 at 9:46 pm #595677I’m on the same boat, I started studying for P1 a couple of weeks ago, watched all the OpenTuition lectures and have moved onto the Kaplan practice questions. This is a hard exam! There are a lot of rules to remember and I’m particularly struggling on the variance questions when it starts to throw things like the sales volume contribution variance. From what I’ve read online, questions which require calculations are only about 30% of the exam. The rest are theory questions. I imagine Kaplan test you on so many calculated questions so that you get used to the format and would be able to answer the theory questions quickly. I’m finding that certain things aren’t sticking in my head either but I’m practising questions 2-4 hours a day and it’s starting to make more sense. I don’t know about your personal circumstances but I would say don’t take the exam until you are confident with all syllabus areas.

I’m starting to focus on more on learning the theory than just memorizing how to do the calculations. I feel like that is helping and im understanding it better. I done all the Kaplan lecture now im just going through the open tuition lecture, certainly helping, well im planning on taking the exam Mid December so that does give me enough time to cover the whole syllabus and practice exam questions.

November 20, 2020 at 8:01 pm #595821@kthomson-When are you thinking of taking your exam?
November 21, 2020 at 12:44 pm #595911I’m hoping to write the exam end of December / start of January. I’m working full time and still feel that I have a long way to go before I’m prepared to sit the exam. I want to make sure I’ll pass first time and not have to fork out the £115 to resit! I usually book the exam about two weeks in advance so I’ll book the exam for end of December if I feel comfortable within the next few weeks.
Do you have a date in mind for your exam?
November 21, 2020 at 8:58 pm #596002Im hoping to do it hopefully Mid December, Started revising 1st Nov, so all in all gives me around 6 weeks of revisions if i aim for Mid December. Been revising 4-5 hours a day hopefully should be enough.
