    Hi,

I am planning to sit the SBL exam in March 2021, and am seeking some advice on the best way to prepare for the exam – noting its differences to the other ACCA examinations…

By way of background, I usually work through all the content/theory making flash cards (using Kaplan textbooks), before I then practice past papers and exam technique.

I am wondering whether this would be the best approach for SBL noting it appears more practical than content / theory heavy? Are we still required to learn each topic/model in detail, or is it simply a case of being aware of all areas at a high level, and then more around practising how to apply these to the given case study?

Any help on the best way to approach preparing for the exam would be much appreciated!

    Thanks in advance,
    Sam

A practical approach goes a long way in SBL, but it is not an exam called ‘Common Sense’ and there is a body of theory that should be known. Recent requirements have been:

    > Identify how each risk response suggested by the three directors would be categorised using an appropriate risk management framework

    > Analyses the environment in which SmartWear operates and consider how this might impact its business model, mission and strategic goals.

    > Prepare a memo addressed to Oliver Wesonga which critically evaluates the outline contents and the summary of operational issues in the project initiation document which he has prepared and recommends improvements.

    > Prepare an email for the chief executive officer which advises her on the responsibilities and activities involved in preparing for and implementing the transformation of TT4U effectively.

For all of these questions (and these are only examples of those available) your answer will be better and more impressive if it is based on a framework or model or standard list. Frameworks help you to make sense of the data and often give a ready-made pattern for the answer. Note that none asks you to describe a model but your are expected to use them where appropriate to give your answer more respectability. You should look upon frameworks and models as helpful friends, not troublesome acquaintances.
