Hi,
I have started doing Cima E1, I was hoping to self teach it, I work in accounts doing Taxation and Payroll costing, have also worked in Finance Control and Data & Reporting. Is using open tuition enough or do people suggest purchasing additional notes eg Kaplan, BPP etc?
October 28, 2020 at 5:00 pm #593377Can I second this question?
Only in my case it’s BA1 that I have only just started. Is it enough to study with OpenTuition plus recommended Revision / Exam Kit or would it be advisable to join cimastudy or other provider too? Thanks!October 29, 2020 at 3:11 pm #593448Just to clarify my question:
First of all, thank you to the OpenTuition for this incredibly valuable material!
As a complete newbie, I am a little lost with the different order of topics covered here, and the fact that some videos I started watching are from 2017 and do not refer to everything that is in the study notes.
I am sure not much have changed since 2017, but it would be great to have the assurance, that between the OT Videos, Study notes and BPP practice kit everything is covered for 2021 preparations.Thank you!
October 29, 2020 at 4:12 pm #593458There have been no substantial changes (if any) since 2017 – it’s still the 2017 syllabus.
I don’t know quite what you mean about the different order of topics. Our notes and lectures are in the same order. Of course, other tutorial firms might have different orders – that’s up to them. The order doesn’t matter much and you should be able to reconcile different learning resources using the chapter headings.
Our notes, lectures and the BPP practice kit should be enough for success – and let us know how you get on. Of course, notes are not as comprehensive as a full text – and you might come across question in the BPP kit that mystify you. Don’t worry about that, you will be able to do most.
October 29, 2020 at 4:13 pm #593459Try without paying for a tuition course – you should be OK. Question practice is vital as the questions can be very sneaky!
October 29, 2020 at 4:17 pm #593460@Tomferdinan: I don’t think you need a text book, but you certainly need a revision/exam kit to provide you with lots of practice. Practice is vital as the questions can be very sneaky.
Of course, a BPP or Kaplan revision kit will be based on their respective texts and, because texts are much fuller than our notes, there will be some questions that might baffle you. Don’t worry too much about those. Our material and question practice should be enough for E1 success.
October 29, 2020 at 8:35 pm #593479Thank you @kengarrett, really happy to hear that. I saw most courses starting with business structure that’s why I was a bit puzzled that here we started with macroeconomics, but as you say, the order doesn’t matter. Thanks for the reassurance and I look forward to studying with Open Tuition, really wonderful to have this free resource.
November 5, 2020 at 7:18 pm #594190Just chipping in my thoughts here as I’ve just completed E1 after completing the certificate level. OpenTuition has been essential for my success so far. Ken and John both provide excellent lectures which will give you the bulk of understanding for the exam – definitely the correct topics covered for the 2017 certificate level exams.
I personally purchase the Kaplan study text and exam kit from the Kaplan Publishing website. I think it’s all about what works for you. My preferred method is to watch the lectures, try the assessment questions, review the study text to brush up on knowledge gaps, try the assessment questions again and then sit the mock exam. Rinse and repeat until you are ready for the exam. It’s also good to book your exam in advance so you have a target to reach and don’t slack with studying. I found it hard to get back into the studying routine when I started CIMA but passing the exam is amazing motivation to push on!
November 8, 2020 at 7:36 pm #594461Thanks @kengarrett. Are there mock exams on open tuition or just the end of chapter tests?
Thanks
November 14, 2020 at 7:38 pm #595032Thanks @kthomson — good to hear that, as that’s similar to my method. I watch the lectures, then go through the notes and sample tests. Then I am following up and revising using BPP books and their tests. The lectures are brilliant, so well explained and I feel they give me a good basis to understand the more complicated (and longer) textbook material.
November 25, 2020 at 8:27 pm #596458It is helpful but extra help is probably advisable.
