What is your opinion on adding more answers if you are not sure about some that you have already answered and can you take full marks from the examiner? For example, if the question asks you to point 5 elements of something and you know the 4 but you are unsure about the 5th, is it OK to put 3 more and hope that the examiner takes the correct one into account and the false ones are dropped out?

Under time pressure I think it’s better to make a best guess at the 5th because otherwise you are spending too much time and effort to get the potential marks for the 5th item (e.g. if it carried 10 marks you could be writing for 11 minutes the “3 more” when you should be spending only 3.6 minutes trying to earn the 2 marks for the 5th item). When the allotted time is up you should always be moving on to the next Q.

Also, if it’s a P paper exam and the Q carries professional marks, disregarding a requirement to a address a specific number of elements is likely to lose you a professional mark.

(When preparing a financial statement – even if you know it’s unfinished/wrong – it’s better to move on rather than spend more time on it when the time is up.)
