Hi,
I failed F5 in March so I’m thinking of taking both F8 and F5 together in December. I haven’t seen many students do this, is this a good idea?

It depends(!) Certainly, the more typical progression for sitting 2 exams together is F5/F6 and F7/F8. Studying F7/F8 together is a good combination because you need a sound understanding of financial statements to appreciate audit. Also, it adds variety to your studies if you are preparing for what is mostly a non-numerical exams alongside a more numerical exam.
Although F5/F8 will give this variety, I wouldn’t recommend it unless you have a sound grasp of financial accounting and achieved a good pass in F3.
Well, there’s no overlap between them but as Kim says some people like that for variety. If you wanted overlap you could take F5 with F9 instead, if you’ve not taken that.
Why take 2 at a time though? I feel with 4 sittings a year the best strategy is to take 1 at a time every 3 months, this allows you to fully focus on each exam. What other F papers do you have left?
I did both together and failed by five marks in each and studied them within three months..keep in mind that they r two difficult subjects with the lowest pass rates in all of Acca, they do need quite a lot of focus…but you can do it if you put in the work…revision kit is key and lots of practice…u actually do have a lot of time if u doing it in December…veryyyy doable…go for it…I enjoyed f8 not f5 but I think it’s a good combo…
I’m taking F7 in June and the plan is to take F6 in September which is why I’m thinking of F5 and F8 in December. I want to pass 4 papers this year which is why I’m doing 2 in Dec.
I did think of doing F6/F8 in Dec but people have said to me that tax is very difficult (more so than F8) and you need enough time to prepare. Now I’m not sure, would F5/F6 be a better combination?
If you do F8 in September your FR knowledge should still be fresh and there’s no reason why you can’t start F5/F6 studies sooner rather than later. It obviously depends on who you ask but for those happy with numbers who can learn “rules” F6 is generally easier that F5 – this is borne out by the pass rates: https://www.accaglobal.com/gb/en/student/exam-support-resources/pass-rates-for-acca-qualifications.html
One of the reasons for the low pass rate in F5 is that many candidates do very poorly on the written elements of Section C. But you should find this easier if you have already done a wholly written exam.

Thanks for the suggestion and I think I might be better off doing F8 in Sep and F5/F6 in December then. As the numerical papers are much more of my thing than wordy/analytical ones.
