SWOT analysis is the best way to assess current position of 1 company.
However, as practicing past exams, I really confuse how to tackle with 1 question regarding this issue : Salt and Soap ( 3.5, 6/04, amended ) : “using appropriate analytical tools assessing Salt and Soap’s current position …”.
The answer relates to these tools : PESTEL, Ansoff matrix, Porter’s models, Product positioning, Product life cycle, Marketing mix.
How I can I know which solution is the best : detailed analysis using 1 tool or using many tools with short explanation ?
Thanks for your advice,
June 11, 2010 at 5:52 pm #63951You raise a valid point, but one that is probably less worrying now than previously. The style of the current examiner is to specify which tool(s) to use eg PESTEL or the S and W from SWOT. He hasn’t always been so helpful, but I suspect we will try to be in the future: must make marking much easier.
Remember, if all else fails, SWOT will always work. However, it is the does display the lowest level of knowledge about models and is improved by using other models as well.
You have to look for clues in the question. Generally:
Environment implies PESTEL
Competitive position implies Porter’s 5 forces
Portfolio of products implies BCG.You shouldn’t worry about this too much 🙂
