hi john
The time for the first batch of 50 units was 500 hours. the total time for the first 16 batches of 50 units was 5731 hours the answer is 92%
I do not understand how to work out the r to the 4th power
March 3, 2018 at 4:08 pm #439933You don’t calculate r to the 4th power!
r^4 = (5731/16) / 500 = 0.716371
Therefore r = fourth root of 0.716371 = 0.92 or 92%
You should have a scientific calculator for Paper F5 and this will calculate any root. However since it is a 4th root in this question, you can get it by taking the square root twice.

March 4, 2018 at 1:25 am #439985should I used 0.716371 ^ 4= .92
March 4, 2018 at 10:56 am #440040No.
0.716371^4 is a way of writing 0.716371 to the power of 4. That is not what we want – we want the fourth root of 0.716371 as I wrote before.
