In an answer to a question, BPP calculated the MV/Quoted share at the gift date as
L+1/2 (H-L)……I hope it has to be L+1/4(H-L) and this is standard?
The valuation rules for a gift of quoted shares are different for CGT and IHT. BPP are answering what must be a CGT question where we use the the mid value of the closing prices whereas you are using the valuation rule for IHT where we use the quarter up valuation rule
I am on CGT. There are two methods of calculating the MV/share
1. L+1/4(H-L)
2. (H+L)/2
We are to choose the one that gives the lower value!
This is what my tutor gave me! I’m wrong? Thank you!
BPP are correct – your tutor has used the old rule that used to apply to CGT but now only applies to IHT – use the mid price for CGT.
