    Hi Mike!

Could you explain, why if there is an existing contract and one party makes a further promise, no contract will arise?

    Thanks.

This has to be a particular situation because, on the face of it, a new contract COULD exist

Maybe in the situation that you envisage there is no EXTRA consideration from the other party to balance the further promise by the first party

    Does that explain it?
