Hi all, hoping you can help. I am a newly qualified ACCA member – I was exempt from a lot of my papers (due to my degree) so sat my professional level and passed within 1 year. I am currently working as a Finance Asst. where I had an manager who let me do month end responsibilities a couple of times so I could have the experience to complete my practical logbook and become a fully qualified member (which I did in December 2016) The plan was for me to stay within the company and work as an Assist. accountant or newly qual. accountant but unfortunately there were some redundancies so I left the business last month and now got a new job doing the same exact thing I was doing 3 years ago as a Finance Asst, with no use or need for my ACCA qualification.
The problem is I have never done the management accounts. I have done Balance sheet recs and posted accruals and interco journals but that is the extent of my experience. The accountant interviews I have been on expect more knowledge/experience. (which I would have gotten if I stayed within my last role) I am even tempted to omit the ACCA qual from my CV but that is only getting me Finance Asst roles so I am really stuck and don’t know what to do.
Is it worth taking a class in doing the accounts? (I have heard about Osborne Training in East London) Does anyone have any advice? I don’t want to lie on my CV and say I can do the accounts, then get the job and not know anything! Any help is appreciated. I am 33 years old and feel as if i have wasted alot of time.
Thank you all.
February 8, 2017 at 6:07 pm #371672Hi
I am in a similar situation as yourself.
I am an affiliate still so still need to complete my PER. However i have not got the exposure to the management side.
Where ever i apply with my current status of an affiliate and with lack the accounting experience no agency nor direct application respond back.
My current employers dont help much to be exposed to management side.
So i am stuck over qualified with no management experience !!!
February 9, 2017 at 1:19 pm #371740Hi
when did you complete your exams? Are you working in a Finance based role now? if so, you may be able to gain more experience especially if they paid for your ACCA and invested the money into you!
Good luck – hope it works outFebruary 9, 2017 at 8:02 pm #371799I qualified in jan after sitting december 2016 exam. I self funded all my papers. I am 34 just like you mature student who is competing against the younger batch. I am currently in accounts assistant role not completed my per so need that management exposure which i am not getting from my current employer.
