Hi Mike,
This may be a ridiculous question but I was wondering if when you are answering a question and you say something is not material and continue to write about this when in fact it should of been material will I loose all the marks going for that part of the question?
I only ask because in some of the other exams I know you get marks if you have some of the question like in the P2 exam but this might be because it is more calculation questions.

If you have decided that it isn’t material, then why would you continue to write about it?
Siobhan, there’s often a clue in the question itself. Where the examiner has set up a scenario and there are 8 marks allocated to any particular part of that question, you can almost certainly guarantee that that scenario contains a matter that’s going to deserve 8 marks’ worth of comment … and an item that is classed as immaterial but that should HAVE (not ‘should of’) been classed as material should shout out at you from the question paper!
How can you write 8 markable points about a matter that is immaterial
Specifically to address your question, it’s a little bit tricky to think of any relevant matter that you could write about an immaterial subject … let alone 8 separate points
To be fair, the examiner – without actually saying “… and this is material …” – really leaves you in no doubt that the subject matter of the question IS or IS NOT material so your question is probably hypothetical and unlikely to be a real issue in the exam.
Now, how many points ? Probably none on the basis that all comments made about an immaterial matter are hardly likely to be point scorers for a material matter
