Hi Mr. Moffat,
I’ve been doing Variance Analysis and have discovered two methods to solve the MTQ Questions. The Marking Scheme does support this method and has shown it as an alternative for some of the past papers i’ve come across.
One of the methods include,
charting vertically downwards SQSP, AQSP and AQAP with minor alterations for Mix, Yield and Labour Variances and then totalling the product and deducting the top – bottom figures to arrive at variance figures.Whereas the second one is the more modern form i presume, its just formulae and therefore there’s a formula for each and every variance … i find it very difficult since I studied the former method first.
Is it true that if I stick with the former method i’m gonna lose marks along the way with the latter being favoured by the examiner and so do we get different answers using the two methods ?
Pls advise.

For questions in Sections A and B nobody will look at your workings anyway – the answers are marked by computer. In Section C your workings are marked but it is again irrelevant which way you choose to do them.
The only exception to the above is with regard to planning and operational variances, where there are two different approaches that give different answers. In my lectures I do it the way that the examiner prefers (which is also the easiest way), but the examiner has said that she will always accept either method.
I do suggest that you watch my free lectures. They are a complete free course for Paper F5 and cover everything needed to be able to pass the exam well.
