Hello everybody,
John Moffat, Ken Garrett and any helpful fellow students I really need your guidance, advice and assistance please !
I come from an non-accounting background. I don’t currently work, nor have I ever worked in an accounts department, or for an accounts team. However, back in July 2015 I was keen to study the ACCA.
I had previously passed GCSEs, A Levels and graduated from University in England
However, neither my my degree nor my Al levels were related to business, finance, accounting, marketing or economics in any way. I had never studied any of these subjects previously.
Nonetheless, ACCA accepted me onto their ACCA qualification programme, as I met their entry criteria and I started to study the ACCA F2 (FMA) paper at Kaplan, as the F2 was the first paper that Kaplan taught.
Since July 2015 I have been struggling with the F2 paper. That was the only paper that I was studying for, and has been the only paper that I have been studying for since July 2015.
I truly believe that I am not making any real progress with the paper, other than the assistance that I have gained from John Moffatt on this forum since 2015. I have also started using the BPP text and revision kit for F2 in addition to Kaplan materials gained in 2015.
Those of you who know the syllabus of the F2 paper will understand the following point.
I started studying the F2 in July 2015 and have only managed to understand the syllabus up to the point of understanding the basics of Process Costing so far.
To reiterate, I have no prior knowledge, nor do I have any experience of working in Accounting.
I am now considering whether I should stop studying for the F2 paper and instead contact the ACCA and request permission to start studying for FIA Introductory Certificate instead.
I realise that the FIA exams are entry level exams and are aimed at people who are new to the world of accounting with no experience of knowledge or practical application.
If I were to successfully pass the MA1 and FA1 then I consider studying the MA2 & FA2.
The last thing I want to do is leave the ACCA !
However, I do believe that my lack of basic knowledge of Accounting principles (as taught on Introductory and Intermediate Certificate levels) is a serious impediment to my progress.
All your assistance would be gratefully appreciated.
January 16, 2017 at 6:00 pm #367720Rather than attempting exams for Introductory & Intermediate Certificates, you should only attend classes. I mean simply study them instead of taking exams and putting your time, effort & most importantly money in it.
Since you’re saying that you are weak as far as the basics are concerned & this is the biggest problem for you, then you should have taken your time for studying the basics, and then starting F2 again.
At last, i believe you should not give up. Keep reminding yourself why have you chosen ACCA instead of any other qualification. You could have chosen any other field after doing A Levels. So, there must be a very valid reason for choosing ACCA, you know well.
As far as help and support is concerned, we are here, Sir John Moffat is here, and the Open Tuition team is here to help you.
January 19, 2017 at 6:40 pm #368392If you are finding F2 difficult then you should either go for an FIA qualification first. That can give you a qualification for an accountancy job.
Also, as suggested by secondstar, think seriously about attending courses. These are run both by commercial companies like BPP or Kaplan, but also by public sector colleges. That will give you the best chance of discovering whether accountancy is for you.
