    December 2013 question no.3
Requirement a) They used table method till october then for November they calculate it through formula. Why is that? Like for September cumulative average hours per batch is 154.88 then after multiplying it by 88% we got October cumulative average hours per batch136.294. If we further multiply it by 88% we will get November cumulative hours 119.938. But in the answer it is 124.4. Why are we calculating November cumulative hours through formula? Why are we not continuing the table approach?

The learning effect finished at the end of October, and so every batch in November will take the same time as the very last batch to be made in October.

The very last batch made in October was the 8th batch to be made.

To calculate how long it took, you need to do what I do in my free lectures – calculate the total time for 8 batches (and for this you can use the doubling rule) and subtract the total time for 7 batches (which you can only do using the formula).

okay. Yes i had seen your lectures. so is it necessary to draw the table in this question? or i can directly calculate it through formula? and if i calculate it directly through the formula will it effect my answer?

You don’t need a table and you can use the formula by all means. Any differences in the answer will only be small rounding differences and they will not lose you any marks.

Just do make sure though that you understand the doubling rule, because the examiner could specifically ask you to use it to prove that you understand it.
If it is not specifically required then it doesn’t matter whether you use the rule of use the formula – whichever you find quicker and easier.
