Morning John Moffat,
I’m stuck on the following question and need your help please.
The following information is available regarding fixed overhead costs and output of 2 production Depts (S&T) of a firm.
Dept S
Allocated / Apportioned Fixed Overhead $60,000
Total Cost of direct materials used $120,000 (I think its Dept Mat Cost)
Total productive labour hours 5,000 hrsDept T
Allocated / Apportioned Fixed Overhead $100,000
Total Cost of direct materials used $100,000 (I think its Dept Mat Cost)
Total productive labour hours 10,000 hrsA product has the following variable cost
Materials
Dept S 3kg @ $4 per kg $12
Dept T 2kg @ $4 per kg $ 8Labour
Dept S 0.5hrs @ $10 per hr $5
Dept T 1.5hrs @ $10 per hr $15Variable overheads
1hr @ $5 per hr $5
_________
Total: $45What is the fixed overhead cost per unit if fixed overheads are absorbed on the basis of departmental material cost ?
My answer:
OAR = Budgeted Overhead / Budgeted Activity
OAR here = Fixed Overheads / basis of departmental material costDepartmental OAR – Dept S
$60,000 / $120,000 = $0.5Departmental OAR – Dept T
$100,000 / $100,000 = $1Dept S
$12 * $0.5 = $6Dept T
$8 * $1 = $8Total = ($6+$8) = $14
Could you please tell me whether I am correct in my approach to answering this question.
Every question I have previously encountered has fixed overheads absorbed by reference to labour hours, not dept material cost.
Thanks.November 22, 2016 at 3:14 pm #350665Yes – it is correct.
(But why are you attempting questions for which you do not have an answer? You should be using a Revision Kit from one of the ACCA approved publishers – they have answers and explanations to all the questions.)
November 22, 2016 at 5:20 pm #350713Thank you for your help John. The question has not been taken from a Revision Kit.
I felt it wise to practice as many F2 questions as possible, taken from a variety of sources.November 23, 2016 at 7:10 am #350877You are welcome, but again, wherever you find questions it is only really helpful for you if you attempt ones that also have answers!!!
April 18, 2020 at 3:43 pm #568686I still don understand. Can u provide more details.thank u
April 18, 2020 at 4:14 pm #568695You do not say what details you need. I presume that you have watched our free lectures on this and that you do have the book containing the question and answer?
March 5, 2021 at 4:04 pm #613542In the Revision Kit,it is 60*(12/120)+100*(8/100)?14,I want to know what this algebraic expression means?Thank you.
March 6, 2021 at 7:50 am #613685There is no algebra in the expression!!
You do not say which Revision Kit or which question in it.
August 12, 2023 at 3:49 pm #689794hello, i still didn’t understand why the candidate used a cost to calculate the OAR instead of the budgeted time, could you please elaborate on this, thanks in advance.
August 13, 2023 at 8:22 am #689832You absorb on whatever basis you are told to in the question. In this case it said to absorb on the basis of the material cost.
